Ohngemach scores five in 15-12 bounce-back win

ST. JOSEPH, Mo.— Senior Caroline Ohngemach scored a career-high five goals, all in the first 34 minutes as the Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team built a 15-6 lead through three quarters before cruising to a bounce-back 15-12 win over host Missouri Western State University in a Sunday afternoon inside game here at the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex.

Five other Mavericks also scored two goals apiece as the Mavericks improved to 1-1 on their season-opening trip for key NCAA Division II Midwest Regional games after falling 16-14 to Rockhurst in Kansas City.

The Griffons were playing their season opener.

Ohngemach had four goals in the first half as the Mavericks built a 10-3 lead through 30 minutes before extending the lead to 15-6 through three quarters.  The Griffons then scored all six goals in the fourth quarter to diminish the final margin.

Justine Anderson also finished with five offensive points, tallying three assists as one of the Mavericks with two goals.  Carson Dickey, Ella Freemon, Courtney Havel, Courteney Murray also scored twice each.

Meanwhile, Emme Rezoski recorded eight draw controls while Ali Bryant had six draw controls and four groundballs while adding four caused turnovers and a pair of assists.

Shannon Murphy made ten saves in net for CMU to pick up the win.

The Mavs stunned the Griffons from the start as Freemon and Dickey both scored goals in the opening minute off Anderson assists.  Murray then scored an unassisted goal just 27 seconds later as the Mavs took a 3-0 lead in the opening 90 seconds before extending the lead to 6-1 with 3:43 left in the opening quarter.

Ohngemach then had back-to-back goals, just 2:17 apart in the second quarter as the Mavs extended their lead to 10-2 before taking a 10-3 advantage into the halftime break.

A 5-1 run in the third quarter then put the game away as Havel scored on a free position shot goal with just four seconds remaining in the third quarter to give the Mavs their 15-6 lead.

The Mavs will continue their season with a trip to Florida, playing at Florida Tech on Feb. 27 and at Saint Leo on Mar. 1.
