CMU men split Arizona duals

PHOENIX — Diogo Manzano completed an impressive rally by the Colorado Mesa men's tennis team to clinch a victory over Arizona Christian for a split of dual matches on Friday (Feb. 14) on the Mavs' annual winter trip to Arizona.

Manzano's 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles against Tobias Frantz secured CMU's 4-3 victory over the NAIA's No. 22 Firestorm at the Phoenix Tennis Center.

Colorado Mesa was down 2-1 after losing the doubles point and the No. 2 singles match, but getting a 6-3, 6-3 win by Romain Payan at No. 3. The Firestorm's Hugo Abril, who reached the quarterfinals of the NAIA ITA Cup in singles and doubles, won the No. 1 singles match over Henry Scheck 6-4, 7-5.

CMU swept the No. 4, 5 and 6 singles matches, getting wins from Philemon Jabin and Emil Hultman to set up Manzano's clinching victory.

The Mavs went down to the wire in a 4-2 loss earlier in the day to Western New Mexico at the Paseo Racquet Club in Glendale.

Up 1-0 after winning two of three doubles matches, Colorado Mesa got another team point from Hultman, who claimed the No. 5 singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Quentin Duivage.

The Mustangs, however, won at Nos. 2, 4, 6 and 1, with Javier Romero clinching the dual with a close three-set win at No. 1 singles over the Mavs' William Leschig 5-7, 6-2, 7-3.

Payan was leading his No. 3 singles match 4-2 in the third set when the match was decided.

Manzano's No. 6 singles match went to three sets before he lost 6-0, 0-6, 6-4.

The split improved CMU's season dual record to 4-3. The Mavericks are 6-8 the past five years on the trip to Arizona, with one match remaining Saturday morning, facing the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.
