Mav men drop two at D-I Idaho State

POCATELLO, Idaho— William Leschig and Henry Scheck won a doubles matches while Philemon Jabin took a set in his No. 4 singles match during the second of two Colorado Mesa University men's tennis duals against Division I Idaho State University on Saturday in the Bengals' Reed Gym.

The Bengals improved to 3-3 with the 7-0 victories in the split doubleheader while the Mavericks fell to 3-2 overall after the first day of the spring season after going 3-0 against fellow Division II opposition in the fall.

Leschig and Scheck won their No. 2 doubles match by a comprehensive 6-2 margin over Sam Wensley and Luka Vujacic in the evening dual.  The Mavs were nearly able to pull out the overall doubles decision as Emil Hultman and Jabin played in a tie-breaker at No. 1 doubles, before falling 7-5 in the breaker to Valentino De Pellegrin and Victor Sklenka.

ISU had won the No. 3 doubles match, 6-1.

In singles, Jabin took the opening set of his match against Wensley by a 6-4 margin before the Bengal came back to take the second set, 6-2 and the super tie-breaker, 10-7.

The Bengals won the other five singles matches in straight sets to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Both teams had made multiple line-up shifts from the morning match, which the Bengals controlled from the start.

The Division I squad gave up just seven games to sweep the three doubles matches and then won all six singles matches in straight sets.

Hultman fared the best for the Mavs in morning singles play, but was edged 6-4, 7-5 by Hayden Ciguenza at No. 5.

The Mavericks will take next week off before playing three matches in Arizona on Feb. 14-15.
