Rowland leads #14 Mavericks to big win over UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Maverick Mason Rowland poured in 26 points to lead the Colorado Mesa women's basketball team to an impressive 73-47 win over UCCS on Thursday (Dec. 4) evening to open RMAC play.

Rowland shot 50 percent (10-for-20) from the field including 4-for-8 from beyond the arc to lead all scorers. The Durango, Colo. native had a near even distribution of her points as 12 came in the first half and 14 in the second.

The Mavericks never trailed against the RMAC Preseason No. 2 ranked Mountain Lions on the road and stretched their lead to 26 late in the fourth quarter as their biggest lead. They shot 50 percent from the field and were into the 60s on field goal percentage but a dip to 25 percent in the second quarter prohibited that finish.

Colorado Mesa was plus-13 in the rebounding battle and were able to score 19 points off 17 UCCS turnovers. The defense continued to suffocate the Mountain Lions as they were only able to shoot just over 33 percent from the field and just five made threes on the night.

One of the biggest reasons for their success was limiting reigning RMAC Tournament MVP Amiyah Moore Allen to just four points on 2-for-11 shooting from the field.

Olivia Reed Thyne finished with 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in nearly 35 minutes of floor time. She drew the tough matchup with Division I transfer Aiyanna Johnson but was able to limit her to eight points and six rebounds.

Redshirt freshman Jenna Krise scored a career-high 14 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the field. It was her most productive night as a Mavericks as she added three assists, a steal and two rebounds in 23 minutes of action.

The Mountain Lions were led the 12 points of Jayla Jackson-Allen. Mya Wilson added six steals and five rebounds.

The Mavericks will conclude their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opening weekend with an afternoon tilt on Saturday against Colorado Christian in Lakewood.
