Early deficit too much to handle as Mavs fall to Mountain Lions in RMAC opener

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University men's basketball team dropped their conference opener this evening as they suffered a 92-80 loss to the UCCS Mountain Lions at Gallogly Events Center.

Moving to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the RMAC, the Mavericks were taken down by a hot-shooting Mountain Lion squad that hit 14 three-pointers from six different players on 48.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Mountain Lions moved to 4-3 with the win while starting conference play 1-0.

UCCS led for over 38 minutes of the game and led by as many as 24 points in the second half. Colorado Mesa held the lead just twice early in the game before trailing the rest of the way.

The Mountain Lions outscored the Mavs 57-39 in the first half of the game before Colorado Mesa had an improved second half outscoring the hosts 41-35.

The Mavs finished the game on a 12-0 run in the final two minutes but ran out of time in their attempt to come back.

Despite the loss, Colorado Mesa had five players score in double figures with Ty Allred leading the way with 23 points. This was Allred's second 20-point performance of the season. In addition, Allred also totaled 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the year.

Cohenj Gonzales scored 13 points while Mason Honeyman added 11.

Both Ben Henderson and Clayton Jewell  had 10 points. The pair combined for 14 rebounds as well with Henderson falling just two boards short of a double-double.

Five players also scored in double figures for the Mountain Lions, a group led by Jezza McKenzie and Gavin Carter, who both finished with 14.

Continuing their weekend on the Front Range, the Mavs will take on Colorado Christian University in another RMAC contest on Saturday with game time set for 3 p.m. at CCU Events Center. Streaming can be found online on the RMAC Network.
