#15 Mavericks run away with home opening win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 15 Colorado Mesa women's basketball team ran their win streak to four games as they defeated Simon Fraser 81-52 on Friday (Nov. 28) evening in Brownson Arena in the first day of the Maverick Thanksgiving Classic.

The Mavericks sprinted out to an early 17-10 lead after the first quarter of action and never looked back as they won all four quarters of the game including a 21-6 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Colorado Mesa enjoyed their best shooting night of the season as they shot 52.5 percent from the field and dominated the glass with a plus-9 margin. They had more points off turnovers than the Red Leafs 14-4 and had a 44-20 points in the paint advantage as well.

Another night and another broken record for Olivia Reed Thyne. This time, the Windsor, Colo. native broke the career field goals record which now sits at 701 career makes topping Maverick Hall of Honor member Tonya Stites' mark of 699 career field goals.

Reed Thyne finished with 23 points, on 9-of-14 shooting from the field, and 14 rebounds for her third double double of the season. She added six assists and four steals in the win.

Senior Mykaela Moore had a solid night as she finished with 18 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field.

Mason Rowland finished with 16 points to round out the Mavericks in double figures.

Red Leaf Haley de Walle led Simon Fraser with 18 points.

The Colorado Mesa defense on Simon Fraser standout Rachel Loukes was outstanding as they limited her to 2-of-15 shooting from the field and just four points on the evening.

Overall, the Mavericks limited Simon Fraser to 31.3 percent from the field including just 2-for-14 (14.3 percent) from the field in the fourth quarter alone. They also forced 17 turnovers and blocked four shots in the game.

This marks the third straight year the Mavericks have won their home opener. The last time they lost came in the Holiday Inn – Airport Thanksgiving Classic in 2022 when they fell to Wayne State (Neb.) 62-59.

Colorado Mesa will close out the weekend tomorrow evening at 5pm when they play host to Sul Ross State. The Lobos fell to RMAC foe Fort Lewis 89-67 in the first game of the tournament today.
