Second half push overtakes Mavs in loss to Mustangs

DURANGO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa University Men's Basketball Team suffered a 78-70 loss to Western New Mexico University as they closed out their weekend in Durango at the Skyhawks Hardwood Classic at Whalen Gymnasium this evening.

The Mavericks now move back to 1-3 this season while facing schools from the Lone Star Conference in every single game thus far while Western New Mexico improved to 3-1 with the win while conversely playing only RMAC school so far this year.

Similar to yesterday's contest, the Mavs and Mustangs played a very much back-and-forth battle in the first half with there being four lead changes and six ties.

Colorado Mesa began the game on a 7-0 start before Western New Mexico bounced back with two three-pointers in a row. The first 10 minutes were mostly a two-point swing between the two teams with three of those lead changes happening in that time.

The Mustangs remained in the lead for the rest of the half with a few ties happening, before the Mavs ultimately scored four points in the final 90 seconds to lead 41-40.

Despite leading at half, the Mustangs overtook the Mavs' lead just four minutes into the second half and never gave it up as they reached a lead as high as 10 points.

In the final 16 minutes of the game Colorado Mesa was able to bring the deficit to one-point but could never break past that mark as Western New Mexico shot 48% from the field in the second half.

Points off turnovers also proved to be costly as the Mustangs totaled 19 in that category compared to the Mavs' seven.

Ty Allred collected his second straight double-double in the game finishing with 23 points and 17 rebounds. This is Allred's highest mark for rebounds in his career with it also being the first time a Maverick has grabbed 17 boards in a game since 2016.

Cohenj Gonzales was the only other Mav to finish in double-digit scoring with him totaling 11 points. Wes Ball also added six points and six rebounds.

Returning to Grand Junction now for their home opener, the Mavs will host the Maverick Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 28 and 29. Both the men's and women's basketball teams will welcome in three different schools with the men's team taking on Texas A&M Int'l and MSU Billings.
