SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The No. 21 Colorado Mesa women's basketball team led wire-to-wire and held Texas A&M-Kingsville to less than 10 points in three of the four quarters in a 68-39 win on Friday (Nov. 21) afternoon at Behnken Field House on the campus of Westminster University.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 17-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and built a 36-17 lead at the halftime break and never looked back. CMU led by as many as 31 points with 2:22 to play in the game after
Joslyn Spires hit a pair of free throws. The only quarter the Javelinas scored more than 10 points in was the fourth and final quarter of play.
Colorado Mesa forced 24 turnovers and converted those into 27 points. They also limited Texas A&M-Kingsville to 32.5 percent from the field, including just two made three-pointers.
Freshman
Brooke Harding made her debut and did not disappoint. Harding finished with a game-high 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting including 3-for-5 from three. The Castle Pines, Colo. native played over 20 minutes in the contest and added three rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Senior
Olivia Reed Thyne finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. With the nine rebounds, Reed Thyne is now the all-time record holder for rebounds with 1,036 passing Tonya Stites who had 1,032.
Reed Thyne was 5-for-10 from the field and added an assist, a steal, and two blocks.
Mason Rowland was the only other Maverick in double digits as she finished with 11 points.
The win moves Colorado Mesa's record to 5-1 on the season and gives head coach
Taylor Wagner 299 wins in his career. Wagner is now tied for the all-time wins record with former coach Steve Kirkham who went 299-157 from 1988-to-2004.
The Mavericks will take on the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks tomorrow afternoon at 3:00pm to close out the Westminster Classic.
