INDIANAPOLIS— The Colorado Mesa University volleyball team moved up one critical spot to eighth in this week's NCAA Division II South Central Regional rankings, which were released on Wednesday afternoon in advance of next Monday's NCAA Tournament selection show, which will air on NCAA.com at 5:30 p.m. MST.
The rankings will be updated one more time following the conclusion of this week's conference tournaments.
Eight teams will be selected from the region, including the champions of the Lone Star Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament, who receive automatic bids. The remaining six spots will be selected at-large and will be determined by the final rankings, which will also shape the 1-8 seeding process.
It is also important to note that results of Tuesday night's RMAC Tournament quarterfinals are not yet included in the ranking process but will be for the final selections.
The Mavs, now 17-9 overall, defeated fourth-ranked Colorado School of Mines on the road in Golden, Colorado. The Mavs now hold a 16-9 record in "in-region" matches and have won five straight matches, their longest winning streak of the campaign.
The top seven spots of this week's regional rankings are unchanged from a week ago with MSU Denver continuing to hold down the No. 1 spot ahead of West Texas A&M, UCCS and Mines. Angelo State, CSU Pueblo and Lubbock Christian are in the No. 5-7 spots, respectively.
The Mavs will play at and against MSU Denver in Friday's RMAC Tournament semifinals and handed the Roadrunners' their only conference loss in September before the Roadrunners avenged that loss on Oct. 30 during the RMAC Power Pod weekend.
Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Kingsville were ranked eighth and tenth, respectively, last week. However, both the Pioneers and Javelinas went 0-2 last week and fell out of the top 10.
They were replaced by St. Mary's (Texas) and UT Tyler, who now hold down the No. 9 and 10 spots, respectively. The Rattlers and Patriots will play each other in the quarterfinal round of the LSC Tournament, which begins on Thursday in San Angelo, Texas. Angelo State is the host and top seed and is playing Texas A&M-Kingsville in the final quarterfinal.
Lubbock Christian is the No. 2 seed to headline the other half of the LSC Tournament bracket and is playing Oklahoma Christian after West Texas A&M, seeded third, will take on Texas Woman's.
All four of the remaining RMAC Tournament teams are in the top eight of the regional rankings with UCCS and CSU Pueblo slated to play in Friday's second semifinal.
The Mavericks are looking to make their fifth straight and 13
th NCAA Tournament appearance.
