#21 Mavericks escape UTPB with overtime win

ODESSA, Texas – Mason Rowland's first double double of the season paced the Colorado Mesa women's basketball team to a 57-49 overtime win over the Texas Permian Basin Falcons in a Sunday (Nov. 16) matinee at the Falcon Dome to close out the South Central Region Challenge.

The redshirt sophomore led the Mavericks in both scoring and rebounds with 24 points and 10 rebounds. She was key in the overtime period as she scored six of her 24 points in the extra period of play. Rowland finished the game a perfect 12-for-12 from the line and added two assists.

Colorado Mesa built a 27-19 lead at the half and was looking to cruise to their third win of the season but things changed drastically in the second half.

Despite playing one of the worst quarters in several seasons, the Mavericks outscored the Falcons in the third quarter 11-10. Colorado Mesa shot 6.7 percent (1-for-15) from the field but were 9-for-10 from the charity stripe.

The Mavericks led by as many as 15 points in the third quarter with 2:26 to go after a pair of free-throws by Rowland. But, the Falcons came storming back in the fourth quarter that was fueled by a 10-0 in the frame. They tied it with a three-pointer with seven seconds left to make it 46-46. The Mavericks quickly inbounded the ball and Mason Rowland sprinted the length of the floor but missed an off balance layin as time expired.

Colorado Mesa built a four-point lead in overtime at 53-49 and then Rowland put down four straight free-throws in the waning second to secure the win.

The Mavericks limited Texas Permian Basin to 27.6 percent from the field and 20.8 percent from beyond the arc while rebounds were virtually even at 45-44. Colorado Mesa forced 23 Falcon turnovers while only having 17 of their own.

Texas Permian Basin Jonesha Neal finished with a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

The Mavericks will be on the road next weekend for a pair of neutral site contests in Salt Lake City. They are set to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday and Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday at Westminster's Behnken Field House.
