Allred buzzer-beater lifts Mavs to upset of #3 Dallas Baptist

DALLAS, Texas – Trailing by two with the last shot of the game in the Mavericks' hands, Ty Allred stepped up to deliver the game-winning three pointer as the Colorado Mesa University Men's Basketball Team upset No. 3 in the nation Dallas Baptist University 78-77 at Burg Center this evening.

The Mavs, who trailed by two going into the second half, caught fire in final 20 minutes of today's game as they shot a staggering 69.6% from the field while being lifted by Allred to victory in the last minute.

With the win, the Mavericks avenged their loss last season to DBU at the D2 Conference Challenge event and give Head Coach Mike Dunlap his first win over a ranked opponent during his CMU tenure.

Dallas Baptist remains winless on the season as they move to 0-3 and now host Colorado Christian tomorrow for their final game of the weekend.

Allred finished the game with 15 points and eight rebounds while being one of three Mavericks to finish with over 30 minutes played. Cohenj Gonzales was the team's leading scorer totaling 20 points in his debut going 8-12 from the field while Harvey White also finished at that mark with 18 points.

Wes Ball and Mason Honeyman rounded out the scoring efforts with Ball having nine points and Honeyman having eight

Five different Mavs made their debut for the team in the game while 11 total saw time on the floor.

Jumping out to an early lead the Patriots owned an 9-4 advantage through the first four minutes with Colorado Mesa responding shortly after with a 9-3 run to make the game just a one-point decision.

Both teams battled closely for the remainder of the half with six lead changes and no lead growing larger than seven.

Going into half, the Patriots held a 2-point edge at 44-42, while barely leading over the Mavs who scored 10 points in the final three minutes, compared to the Patriots' six.

Trevor Frank led all scorers in the first half with 15 while the Mavs spread out their offense with 4 different players totaling seven or more points. Gonzales led that group for Colorado Mesa with 14 off the bench.

Building off their momentum going into the half, the Mavs continued to press hard through the first five minutes of the second half outscoring the Patriots 14-8.

The Mavs reached a lead as high as seven points with roughly 10 minutes left to play before the Patriots went on a run in return outscoring CMU 17-8 to take the lead with just over a minute to play.

Dallas Baptist had opportunities to build on their lead in that last minute but would miss a costly free throw and three-pointer to maintain just the two-point difference.

With less than 30 seconds on the clock Colorado Mesa went to their final possession with Allred ultimately ending up with the ball. After pump faking and making a defender jump past him, Allred launched a three pointer from near the logo and swished the shot, lifting the Mavs to the win.

Both teams shot just 23% from three-point range in the game, with Allred's lone three he made being the game-winner.

Closing out their stay at the DII Conference Challenge, the Mavs will now take on St. Edward's University tomorrow at 4 P.M. MST at Burg Center. Streaming can be found online through FloCollege.
