LANGLEY, B.C. – The No. 21 Colorado Mesa women's basketball team moved their record to 2-0 on the season after defeating the host Simon Fraser Red Leafs 61-54 on Saturday (Nov. 1) evening after leading nearly wire-to-wire.
For the second straight game, the Mavericks built a double-digit lead and managed to hold on to the lead in the end. They led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter after
Mykaela Moore buried a three-pointer to make it 48-34 with 1:33 to play in the quarter.
Simon Fraser battled back late in the game and cut the lead to just five points with 2:51 to play after Rachel Loukes hit a jumper with 2:51 to play to make it 55-50. But in the end, Colorado Mesa held on thanks in large part to
Mason Rowland scoring the final six points of the night, going 6-for-8 from the foul line.
The Mavericks made hay with second chance points. They pounded the offensive glass as they finished with 12 offensive rebounds and converted those into 14 second chance points while Simon Fraser was only able to finish with one second chance point.
Olivia Reed Thyne finished with a game-high 22 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. The Windsor, Colo. native had six rebounds in the game which leaves her just four rebounds away from pulling down 1,000 in her career. Reed Thyne also had two assists and a blocked shot.
Senior
Mykaela Moore was named the player of the game after pouring in 12 points and grabbing six rebounds. She shot 5-for-8 from the field including 2-for-5 from beyond the arc and added four assists and a steal.
Tamryn Blom came off the bench and gave the Mavericks a great shot in the arm. She finished the game with eight points and seven rebounds in nearly 29 minutes of action.
Simon Fraser's Rachel Loukes finished with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists.
The Mavericks will close out the weekend tomorrow afternoon with a matchup against St. Martin's at 3pm from the Langley Events Center.
