Olivia Reed Thyne zoomed past the 1,000 career rebound milestone in a big way, grabbing 20 boards while she and
Mason Rowland combined for 36 points in a run-away 65-40 win over Saint Martin's University in both team's final game at the D2CCA Canadian Tip Off Classic on Sunday here at the Langley Event Centre.
Reed Thyne, who entered the game just four rebounds away from the milestone, hauled down 11 offensive rebounds and made a living from the free throw line, scoring 11 of her 17 points from the charity stripe.
Meanwhile, Rowland scored a game-high 19 points and added seven rebounds as the Mavs completed a perfect 3-0 weekend at the tournament while improving to 6-0 all-time in Canada.
Saint Martin's fell to 1-2 as a tenacious Maverick defense held the Saints to 21.1 percent (12-57) shooting and to just a single 3-pointer.
The Mavericks never trailed and allowed just six points in the first quarter while going on a 15-0 run in that stanza to open up a 17-2 lead.
Reed Thyne had six rebounds in the opening quarter and reached the milestone with 2:52 to go in the opening quarter, just moments before
Hallie Clark scored a second chance layup to give the Mavs a 16-2 lead.
The Mavs then allowed just 12 points in the second quarter and led 31-18 at the break before outscoring the Saints, 17-6 in the final quarter.
Led by Reed Thyne, who tallied her second double-double of the season and the 42
nd of her career, the Mavericks recorded a big 52-29 (+23) rebounding advantage
Reed Thyne also recorded five blocks and had nine defensive caroms while adding a steal in what was just the sixth 20-plus rebound effort in program history.
The Windsor, Colorado native now has two of those efforts. She now 1,016 rebounds in her career as just the third Maverick to ever reach quadruple figures. She also moved into second place on the Mavs' all-time charts, passing Pam DaCosta's total of 1,012.
Reed Thyne is now just 16 away from Tonya Stites' record of 1,032.
The Mavs also had ten different players score in Sunday's win, led by Rowland, who finished 6-for-12 from the field and 5-for-8 from the free throw line. She also had made two of the Mavs' three triples and recorded three assists.
The Mavericks scored 32 points in the paint and had 24 second chance points.
They will look to continue the hot start at South Central Regional rival West Texas A&M on Nov. 14 in Canyon, Texas as part of the D2 Conference Challenge. The Lady Buffs are receiving votes in the national preseason poll and went 1-1 in their season-opening tournament after defeating Division I Arizona in a preseason exhibition.
