Mavs celebrate senior day with shutout of Mountaineers

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Celebrating the team's seven seniors in a dominant winning fashion, the #22 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team shutout Western Colorado University this evening in a 4-0 victory at Community Hospital Unity Field.

Improving their win streak to four, the Mavericks are now 7-2 this season while staying a perfect 3-0 in RMAC play. Their previous game on Friday night against Fort Lewis College was postponed to a later date after weather entered the area in Durango. Western Colorado, who still has yet to win a game, drops to 0-9-2 (0-2-2 RMAC) with the loss.

Following the win, Colorado Mesa honored the team's seven seniors with the group of Braelyn Baclayon, Peyton Bundy, Shelby Lyon, Bree McCullough, Isabel Schauber, Ally Wachtel and Kylie Wells each being recognized.

During the game four different players tacked on goals for Colorado Mesa with the group of Parker Mairs, Wells, Olivia Bariao-Arce and Ellie Duncan each scoring one goal apiece. Every one of the goals were scored unassisted as well.

Mairs scored the first goal of the game for the Mavs in the 11th minute with her attacking from a side angle at the net to which she fired into the top left corner. Mairs goal was her first of the season.

Following in the 15th minute was Wells to score as the Senior built on the lead from long range by the edge of the sideline. Wells' shot looked like a cross initially heading towards the goal but after the ball missed everyone, it found the corner of the net. Wells now owns eight goals this season while continuing her streak of scoring in every home game this year.

Not finished in the first half, it was then Bariao-Arce that tacked on another score for the Mavs in the 37th minute with her goal coming after breaking past a pair of defenders from less than 10 yards outs.

The final fourth goal of the contest came in the first half as well with this one being in the 43rd minute. Duncan scored this time with her being able to score on her own rebound after a first shot was blocked back at her.

At half the Mavs outshot the Mountaineers 12-4 while finishing the game outshooting them 26-10. Each team finished with an even four corner kicks.

The second half featured much defense with many faces for each team getting time on the pitch.

Recording her sixth shutout of the season was Keely Wieczorek with the Junior collecting five saves in the net. She now raises her career total to 26.

Staying at home for another week the Mavs will host Black Hills State this next Sunday as they only play one contest. Tickets and information can be found online at cmumavericks.com/tickets.
