GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Continuing their trend of dominance at home this season, the #23 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team played to their fifth straight win this afternoon as they defeated Black Hills State University 4-0 at Community Hospital Unity Field.
Staying a perfect 7-0 at home, while having yet to concede a goal at home or in conference play, the Mavericks are now 8-2 this season while staying undefeated in the RMAC at 4-0. They currently sit in first of the conference standings. The Yellow Jackets moved to 4-6-2 with the defeat while dropping to 1-5 in conference play.
Controlling the tempo of nearly the entire game, the Mavs scored two goals in each half of the contest while outshooting the Yellow Jackets 23-2. In addition, this was the team's third straight and seventh shutout of the year.
Over the last three games Colorado Mesa has held opponents to just 16 shots of offense.
Scoring in the victory was the trio of Parker Mairs, Olivia Bariao-Arce and Savanah Miller with Mairs leading the way having two goals herself.
Mairs first goal of the game came in the 11th minute after she scored on a chip shot with her receiving the ball inside the penalty area on a misfired pass by the Yellow Jackets.
Bariao-Arce was next to score for the Mavs as she came around in the 26th minute using a spin move to create an opening around a defender before hitting a line drive into the bottom left corner of the net.
Into half the Mavs lead 2-0 with them outshooting Black Hills 14-0. They would also have the first four of their eventual eight corner kicks.
Continuing the attack in the second half was Mairs again for Colorado Mesa with her scoring in the 56th minute this time. Mairs' second goal came after a long pass downfield from Sarah Dunn to which she sent in from about 15 yards out.
Tacking on the final goal of the day was Miller in the 84th minute with hers being a bit more rare as she scored an 'olimpico goal.' After being granted a corner kick, Miller launched the ball into her team from the corner, but upon the ball missing everyone, it found the corner of the net giving her the rare phenomenon. This was her first goal of the season.
The Yellow Jackets added two shots on goal in the second half to avoid a shotless-game, but both were saved by Keely Wieczorek as she now improves her career shutout record to 27.
Taking to the road now, the Mavs head south this following weekend as they take on both New Mexico Highlands and Adams State University on Friday and Sunday. Streaming can be found through the RMAC Network.
