LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The #20 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team posted their eight shutout of the season this afternoon as they extended their winning streak to six with a strong 2-0 victory over New Mexico Highlands University at Cinder Road Field.
Owning a perfect 5-0 record in RMAC play, the Mavericks are now 9-2 this season while sitting in first place of the conference. The Cowgirl continue to struggle this year with the loss as they now are 1-9 (0-6 RMAC).
Scoring both goals in the first half and outshooting the Cowgirls 25-4, the Mavs posted their first road shutout in the victory as they have yet to allow a goal in conference play. Over the last three games they have outscored opponents 10-0.
The duo of Olivia Bariao-Arce and Ellie Duncan each scored in the win with this being the Mavs' third straight game to take over 20 shots as a team. The duo are also now tied for three goals apiece this year.
Bariao-Arce scored the game-winning goal in the first half with hers coming just five minutes into the contest. Upon receiving a pair of passes up field, Bariao-Arce broke past a defender in her score as she hit a hard roller past a diving goalkeeper who came to try and stop the shot.
Scoring the second first half goal was then Duncan for the Mavs who came around in the 33rd minute to extend the lead. Duncan's goal came after bit of commotion in the penalty area in which she hammered the ball in from a side angle after the ball ricocheted in her direction.
The Mavs outshot the Cowgirls 15-2 in the first half with both teams playing to a scoreless second half to follow despite Colorado Mesa once again owning the shot advantage at 10-2.
In addition to high shooting effort, the Mavs also owned nine corner kicks in the game with the Cowgirls having none.
Keely Wieczorek recorded three saves in the net raising her season total to 39. She continually grows her shutout record, now owning 28 in her career.
Continuing their weekend in the South, the Mavs will head to Alamosa this Sunday as they take on Adams State University for a 1 P.M. start at ASU Soccer Field.
