GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 9 Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team sent their seniors out on a high note as they defeated the Adams State Grizzlies 38-8 on Saturday (Jan. 25) afternoon in Brownson Arena. The three seniors that were honored prior to the dual all earned the team points tonight and finished their careers undefeated at home.
The Mavericks won eight of the nine contested matches as senior
Erica Smith picked up a forfeit victory at 145 pounds.
103-pound senior
Jennesis Martinez opened the dual with a second period pin of Grizzly Katelyn Faczak to give the Mavericks the only lead they would need on the night. Martinez, ranked No. 8 at 103 pounds, to improve to 4-0 on the season and finished her home career undefeated.
In what was the match of the night, Adams State's Austria Holland defeated
Isabella Morales 6-4 at 110 pounds. The two grapplers were tied at 4-4 after the first period, but Holland scored a second period takedown that proved to be the difference.
Jojo McDaniel (117) and
Hania Halverson (131) each earned technical fall wins while
Lorianna Piestewa (124) sandwiched in a pin at 2:53 to complete a three-bout run for the Mavericks.
Adams State's Corrie Williams earned a win over Val Glenn at 138 pounds as the final Grizzly to record a victory on the evening.
The ranked trio of
Gretchen Donally (No. 10 at 160),
Alison Evans (No. 10 at 180) and
Isabeau Shalack (No.9 at 207) each earned bonus point victories. Donally picked up a quick first period pin while Evans earned a 11-0 tech fall win at 180 pounds.
Isabeau Shalack capped her Brownson Arena career with a win by pin over Brooke Ochoa at 1:08. Shalack, ranked No. 9 at 207 pounds, earned a push out point followed by a pair of takedowns before getting the pin.
The win moved the Mavericks home dual win streak to 14 that dates to the inaugural season of 2018-19. In fact, the lone Maverick home dual loss came to No. 1 NAIA ranked Wayland Baptist in the inaugural competition.
Colorado Mesa will now head to Colorado Springs next week for the second annual RMAC Championships on Saturday February 1. The tournament will be held at Colorado College and be broadcast on the RMAC Network.
