Grand Junction, Colo. – Riding high this week on a six-game winning streak and winning the last four games at home, the Colorado Mesa Men's Basketball Team will head out on the road for action this week when they head north to take on opponents Black Hills State and Chadron State for a pair of RMAC Conference games.

The Mavericks will take on Black Hills State on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. at Donald E. Young Center in Spearfish, S.D. before trekking down to Nebraska to face Chadron State on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 3 p.m. at Chicoine Center.

Beginning this Thursday the Mavs will be on the road for four straight games before returning to Brownson Arena on Feb. 6 for Retail Appreciation Night against MSU Denver.

LAST WEEK'S GAMES
In continuing of the team's dominance over RMAC teams since the beginning of 2025, CMU secured another two wins this last week when they took down both Western Colorado University and Westminster University.

Both games were tightly contested, with the Mavs' winning both by not only one point but also the same exact score of 64-63 in each of them. In the team's win over Western Colorado they won on a buzzer-beater three-pointer by Ty Allred as time expired. They then defeated Westminster on a final defense stand to end that game, after Yaak Yaak would score the go-ahead basket with 45 seconds to play.

The week's games were very much characterized by lots of defense after scoring 80 plus points in the prior week's two games.

Allred led all scorers with 17 points in the game against Western Colorado with Christopher Speller scoring 14 points to lead the Mavs in their game against Westminster.

LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS
Diving deeper into a team that has seen much success lately, the Mavericks are 10-6 this season and are 4-4 in the RMAC. They are currently on a six-game winning streak and since starting action in 2025 they have won all four games they have played.

Prior to the start of 2025 the Mavs had dropped all four games of conference play they competed in. Since then, they have bolstered their resume and have risen all the way to sixth in the standings and are one of only five teams in the conference with double digit wins.

Offensively, the team is currently averaging 70.8 points per game and are shooting 45.9% from the field. In contrast they are holding opponents to only 70.7 points per game and shooting just 42.8% from the field, good enough for fourth-best in the entire conference.

CMU has also been dominant on the boards season as they are grabbing 35.6 boards per game while limiting opponents to just 32.3. They are also ranked first in blocks with 68 (4.25 per game) and steals where they are ranked fifth with 115 (7.19 per game) on the defensive end.

Individual performers who have led the team this season are the trio of Ty Allred, Harvey White and Will Mortimore who are all averaging scoring in the double digits. Allred is the team leader with 14.5 points per game with White scoring 10.8 ppg and Mortimore scoring 10.7. There have been nine different players who have scored in double digits this season.

Leading the team's rebounding charge are the duo of Allred and Mortimore as the pair both average over six boards a game, with Mortimore leading the team at 6.9.

White serves as the team leader in assists with 3.4 per game, which is marked at fifth best in the conference.

Yaak Yaak, is the team and conference leader in blocks with 29.

ABOUT BLACK HILLS STATE
In the Mavs' first time heading north for travel this season, they will take on the Black Hills State University Yellowjackets for Thursday's contest.

Black Hills is currently 9-7 on the season and in the RMAC have played to a 5-3 record. In this year's preseason poll, the Yellowjackets were selected to finish fourth in the conference.

In their most recent game they suffered an 82-73 loss to Fort Lewis College on Jan. 18. Since beginning play in 2025, Black Hills State has gone 2-2 thus far.

The team's top player this season is Caelin Hearne who is averaging 15.9 points per game to be ranked fifth in the conference. The three other players of Cam Lowe (14.4 ppg), Jaeton Hackley (11.1 ppg) and Tristan Hurdle (10.4 ppg) all average scoring in the double digits as well. Lowe is also grabbing 7.8 boards per game to be ranked third in the conference in that category.

Following Thursday's game against CMU, they will host Western Colorado on Saturday.

ABOUT CHADRON STATE
Traveling to Nebraska after Thursday's game the Mavs will take on Chadron State College to end their week.

This season the Eagles have played to a 7-9 record while fairing 3-5 in RMAC play. In their most recent game they were narrowly defeated by New Mexico Highlands on a buzzer beater finish to lose 97-96. In 2025, they are 1-3 to start the second half of the season.

Three players for the team average scoring in the double digits with Zy Wright leading the team at 13.3 points per game. Jalen Thomas (12.6 ppg) and Julio Phipps (10.4 ppg) round out the trio.

Despite recent struggles, Chadron still has shown much defensive prowess as they have held opponents to shooting just 41.9% on the year which ranks them at third best in the conference.

Prior to playing the Mavs the Eagles will first take on Westminster University on Thursday for their first game of the week.
