GUNNISON, Colo.— Ty Allred hit a game-winning 3-pointer as time expired as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks scored five final minute points to come from four points down and claim their fifth straight win by a 64-63 margin at rival Western Colorado University on Tuesday night here in the Mountaineers' Paul W. Wright Gymnasium.
The Mavericks trailed 63-59 heading into the final minute of play but sliced the deficit to 63-61 on a
Will Mortimore layup with 45 seconds left.
Following a Mountaineer timeout, Mortimore came up with a steal before the Mavs advanced the ball into their front-court and worked the ball around for a tough Allred shot from the right wing that beat the buzzer, which was confirmed by an ensuing video review.
The way the Mavericks claimed the win was somewhat ironic, considering they shot 33.3 percent (5-15) from 3-point territory while the Mountaineers made a living from beyond the arc, hitting on 11 of 18 (61.8 percent) of their long distance calls, scoring nearly half of their points from distance.
However, Allred countered by hitting on three of his six 3-point attempts and finished the night with a team-high 17 points. He also added six rebounds to lead the Mavs just three days after recording his first career-double-double in last Saturday's home win over Adams State University.
Harvey White also made a pair of 3-pointers on five attempts and finished the game with 14 points.
Yaak Yaak chipped in 12 points and four boards and blocked five Mountaineer shots. The RMAC's leading shot blocker now has 12 blocks in the last three games and 18 in his last five.
Mortimore was also in double figures and grabbed five rebounds in Tuesday's victory.
Western's Trey Anderson finished with 19 points and hit on five of his nine 3-point shots to lead the Mountaineers. He also had six rebounds and three assists.
With Tuesday's win, the Mavericks improved to 9-6 overall and moved level with the Mountaineers (5-9) at 3-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings.
CMU has come from small half-time deficits in each of their three RMAC wins since the calendar moved to 2025 after wrapping up 2024 with a pair of non-conference wins in San Antonio, Texas. The Mavs' 5-game winning streak is their best of the season.
They trailed 33-29 at the half of Tuesday's victory after falling behind by as many as ten points (18-8) after the first 7:15 of action.
The Mountaineers then had smaller leads for much of the second half, although the game did feature five lead changes and five ties after the intermission.
The Mavs took their first lead since a 3-2 early advantage with 6:38 left as
Christopher Speller made two free throws to put CMU in front 50-48. Speller, who had six points, three rebounds, four assists and four steals, then made a jumper with 6:15 left to give CMU a 52-49 advantage.
However, the Mountaineers went on a 7-0 run to regain the lead, 56-52.
Allred then took over, scoring the game's next five points, hitting a 3-pointer with 4:06 left before adding two free throws nearly a minute later after the final media timeout.
However, the Mountaineers went on another 7-2 spurt and took their 63-59 as Kade Juelfs assisted on a key Amar Rivers 3-pointer before adding two free throws with 58.3 seconds to go.
The Mavs then called timeout before Mortimore's layup triggered the CMU comeback.
Despite being outshot, 46.5 to 42.4 percent, the Mavs committed just five turnovers and finished with a 16-9 advantage in offensive rebounds as the teams finished the overall rebounding battle event at 31 apiece.
The Mavs have now won eight straight and 18 out of the last 21 games in the rivalry.
The Mavs will now return home to face Westminster University on Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The Griffins are currently 9-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play. They will host Western on Thursday evening in Salt Lake City, where they are 7-1 this season, before making the trip to CMU's Brownson Arena.
