CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The No. 6 ranked Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team will be coming home with some hardware after a strong opening day at the NWCA National Dual Tournament at the UNI Dome on Friday (Jan. 10) afternoon. See a brief recap of each of their three duals below:
#6 Colorado Mesa 22, Sacred Heart 22 (CMU wins on matches won tiebreaker)
The Colorado Mesa Mavericks started the NWCA National Dual Tournament off with a barn burner against Sacred Heart. The two teams finished the dual tied at 22-22 but the Mavericks prevailed on the tiebreaker as they won six matches to the Pioneers four match wins.
The Mavericks won the first three bouts of the dual with Maddison Heinzer earning a decision victory at 103 pounds and
Isabella Morales (110) and
Jojo McDaniel (117) each picked up technical fall wins. Those wins jolted the Mavericks out to a 9-3 lead.
The Mavericks and Pioneers traded wins the next four bouts with
Hania Halverson earning a technical fall at 131 pounds and
Celina Cooke a criteria decision win at 145 pounds.
The bout came down to the 207-pound match after Sacred Heart earned wins at 160 and 180 pounds.
Isabeau Shalack came away with a decision victory which left the matchup tied.

In the quarterfinals, the Mavericks ran into one of the best teams in the country in third-ranked King. Colorado Mesa fell 32-15 in the dual and were only able to pick up three wins in the matchup.
Junior
Hania Halverson picked up a big win in the dual as she was able to pin Anna DiCugno at 4:13 in her 131-pound match. DiCugno entered the matchup ranked No. 8 in the latest NWCA National Rankings.
Maggie Smith (180) and
Isabeau Shalack (207) earned forfeit victories to close out the dual.

Colorado Mesa picked up a big win over No. 12 ranked Emmanuel 25-17 that will send the Mavericks into the placement rounds tomorrow at the NWCA National Duals. The Mavericks won six of the 10 bouts on their way to the victory.
Maddison Heinzer and
Sophia Cornish opened the dual with back-to-back wins giving the Mavericks a lead they would not let go of. Heinzer had a hard fought 13-6 win at 103 pounds before Cornish pinned Dinayah Vazquez at 4:18 for the 8-1 lead.
Hania Halverson continued her strong day going 3-0 and stopping a mini-Emmanuel two match run with a 10-0 tech fall win over Isabella Hoffman at 131 pounds.
After a Golden Eagle win at 138 pounds, the Mavericks would go on to win three of the final four bouts of the dual.

Gretchen Donally picked up a 12-2 technical fall win at 160 pounds.
