Mavs shutout Cowgirls in 6-0 victory

Fotheringhman scores twice and assists twice in the win

Grand Junction, Colo. - The Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team looked ready for conference play tonight as in their first match against an RMAC opponent they would beat them handily, with the Mavs taking a 6-0 win over the Cowgirls of New Mexico Highlands University.

The last time the Mavs scored six or more goals was in 2023 when they beat Newman University 7-0 on Sept. 8.

The Mavs, who are receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches National Poll, bounce back from their trip to Texas to now raise their record to 3-1-2 (1-0 RMAC), while the Cowgirls drop to 2-4-1 (0-1 RMAC).

Five different players for CMU would score in tonight's match with Abby Fotheringham leading the way with two goals herself. She would also notch her first two assists of the season in tonight's match.

Fotheringham's first goal would come in the 11th minute of the match, when Carli Dare would drive down the left side of the field and then launch a big cross to her teammate that Fotheringham would hit into the top left corner of the net. Dare would earn the assist on the goal, her first of the year.

Adessa Correa would notch her first goal of the season next in the match when in the 25th minute Dare would flick her a pass just inside the penalty box, where she then shot it to the bottom right part of the net. This would mark Dare's second straight assist in the match.

Less than a minute later, Kylie Wells too would score, as she notched her second goal of the season on an assist from Fotheringham.

Sarah Dunn would continue the offensive tear as she tallied her own goal in the 28th minute. Fotheringham earned another assist on that goal to continue her rampant night.

The Mavs still not happy with their 4-0 lead, would score again in the first half as in the final seconds of the 28th minute as Fotheringham would score once more with Dunn now taking the assist on this goal.

Both Fotheringham and Dare would total two assists on the night.

With the Mavs leading 5-0 at half, many more faces would enter the match, but the Mavs knew that they had at least one more goal in them come the last 45 minutes.

Sauvelyne Randel, who took seven shots in the game, would score that goal as she finally found the back of the net in the 78th minute. Olivia Barrett would tab her first point of the season on that goal as she earned the assist.

At the end of the night, CMU would dominate the stats sheet as they took 33 total shots in the match with 18 of them being on goal. New Mexico Highlands would only attempt three shots with zero on goal. The Mavs would attempt 18 shots in the first half before taking 15 in the second.

Wells and Randel would each lead the team with seven shots apiece.

Goalkeeper Keely Wieczorek would have zero saves but would record another shutout as she now has two this season and 12 in her career.

The Mavs only had seven goals going into tonight's game this season, but following the win they now have outscored opponents 13-7 through six games.

CMU will now continue their weekend on Sunday with another home match against Adams State University. The Mavs will take on the Grizzlies at 12 p.m. at Community Hospital Unity Field. Sunday's match is Kid's Camp Day, put on by the soccer team.
