Colorado Springs, Colo. - The CMU Men's Soccer Team two-game winning streak would end tonight as in a competitive battle with top opponent from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, #5 UCCS would hand the Mavs their second loss of the season in a 2-1 decision.
Colorado Mesa now moves to 3-2-1 while UCCS stays undefeated at 6-0-1. Tonight's match was a nonconference game and does not affect conference standings.
Colorado Mesa would score the first goal of the match in the 26th minute when Joao Pedro Moraes would take a pass from Marc Bonafe to score in the bottom right corner of the net. This would mark Pedro Moraes' first goal of the season. He would be assisted by Bonafe who has now totaled four assists in three games.
UCCS would retaliate shortly after with a goal of their own as Dani Barajas, who leads the conference in goals now with five, would drive up the right side of the pitch to score in the bottom right side of the net and past a diving CMU goalie. His goal was assisted by Soulo Letsoalo and Lars Walczyk.
The match would stand at 1-1 going into half.
The Mountain Lions would strike again in the second half when in the 58th minute Dillon Clark would break the tie with a goal of his own. He would be assisted by Jackson Million.
Offensively, the Mavs would be outshot in the game as they take 12 shots compared to the Mountain Lions 22. Pedro Moraes and Marc Bonafe would lead the Mavs with three shots each.
Diego Chavez would total four saves on the Mountain Lions six shots on goal.
CMU will now return to Grand Junction for their long-awaited home-opener this Sunday, Sept. 29, as they take on #18 Fort Lewis College at Community Hospital Unity Field. Game time is slated for a 3 p.m. start following the women's soccer game. Tickets can be purchased at cmumavericks.com/tickets.
