Mavs battle to 1-0 loss to #18 Fort Lewis

Box Score

Grand Junction, Colo. - The Colorado Mesa University Men's Soccer Team would play a physical 90 minutes against #18 Fort Lewis College, but ultimately it was a 3rd minute goal by the Skyhawks that would prove to be too much as the Mavs would be defeated 1-0 in their final game of nonconference play.

CMU would play both ranked opponents this weekend to one-goal matches, but could only score one in total compared to their opponent's three. The Mavs are now 3-3-1 on the year with the Skyhawks improving to 4-0-4. Both teams will now begin RMAC play this next week.

Physicality was the theme of today's match as there were six different yellow cards handed out, with the Mavs receiving four of them. There would be over 20 fouls called as well with the Mavs having 14 themselves.

Much of the physicality came into play as the Mavs went down early and were chasing a 1-0 lead from the 3rd minute.

In the 3rd minute, Fort Lewis' Tomas Duenes Gonzalez would knock in a cross from teammate Tristen Banquil to quickly start the match 1-0.

Fort Lewis would outshoot the Mavs in today's contest as they shot 15 times with five of them on goal. CMU would take 10 shots with six on goal. Riccardo Legnante and Justin Ibrahim would lead the Mavs with two shots each.

Diego Chavez would total four saves in the match.

This is only the second time this season that the Mavs have been shutout. Their other time came against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 14.

Colorado Mesa will now begin RMAC play this next week when they take on opponents Regis University and South Dakota School of Mines. CMU and Regis will face off on Thursday, Oct. 3, in Denver on Regis Turf Field before the Mavs head up to Rapid City on Sunday, Oct. 6, to play the Miners.
