Austin, Texas – The #14 Colorado Mesa University Women's Soccer Team would come up short in their match against St. Edwards University as they would suffer their first loss of the season to the Hilltoppers in a 2-0 decision.
Colorado Mesa will now return home following their three-day stint against Lone Star Conference opponents in Texas.
With the loss CMU now moves to 2-1-2 with the Hilltoppers collecting their first home win and improving to 2-2-1.
Today's match marks the first time this season that the Mavs have been shutout.
While being shutout, CMU would mark their match-high shot total with 26 shots attempted with 13 of them on goal. They would also total nine corner kicks.
Both Kylie Wells and Sauvelyne Randel would total six shots each to lead the team.
St. Edwards would score their first goal of the day when in the 5th minute the Mavs would make a costly foul in the penalty box to give the Hilltoppers their first penalty kick attempt of the season. Annie Rocha would fire a hard ball to the bottom right part of the net, just out of the reach of goalkeeper Keely Wieczorek, to give St. Edwards an early 1-0 lead.
The Hilltoppers would score again in the 37th minute when a long shot distance shot was deflected by Wieczorek with the deflection leading to a short chip shot by Isabella Ruiz to extend the St. Edwards lead to two.
CMU would take a staggering 19 shots in the second half to try and erase the zero, but stellar play by the Hilltoppers' goalie would keep the Mavs off the scoreboard.
With today's loss the Mavericks now end nonconference play and start up competition with RMAC opponents as they host a pair of teams this next weekend when they take on New Mexico Highlands University and Adams State University at Unity Field. Matches are set for Friday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. against NMHU and Sunday, Sept. 29, at 12 p.m. against ASU.
