PUEBLO, Colo. — Jade Brilhante and Jane Steur won both of their singles matches and were on two winning doubles teams Saturday (Sept. 14) as the CMU women's tennis team bounced back with a pair of victories in the Pueblo Duals.
The Mavericks held off two Kansas opponents, Newman 4-3 and Fort Hays State 5-2, to even their dual record to 2-2 this fall.
Brilhante, a junior transfer from Northern Arizona, played No. 5 singles against the Jets in the morning, claiming 6-0, 6-0 victory, then moved up one spot to No. 4 singles against the Tigers, where she battled to a 6-4, 7-5 win.
Steur also bumped up a spot in the afternoon. After her 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory at No. 6 singles in the win over Newman, which clinched the dual, she played No. 5 against Fort Hays State, winning 6-4, 6-1.
The Mavericks swept the doubles competition to take a 1-0 lead in the team score heading into singles play in each dual.
Against Newman, Devyn Rodriguez gave CMU its first singles point with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) victory at No. 2, and it was 2-2 heading into the final three matches. Brilhante wrapped up her match, but Newman won a toss-up match at No. 4 when Luciana Flores Urey outlasted Catalina Ballon Marin 7-5, 6-4. Steur delivered in the final match of the dual.
CMU had a 3-2 lead against the Tigers with two matches to go, and Delia Maier won a third-set tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4) to clinch it. Right after that, Brilhante gave the Mavs another point with her No. 5 victory.
Makenna Livingston won her No. 1 singles match over Shreethika Vangala 6-4, 6-2.
Like the men, the CMU women will wrap up the fall season at the ITA West Regional Championships from Sept. 26-28 in Azusa, Calif.
