Mavs Suffer First Loss of the Season to CSUMB

Salt Lake City, Utah – The Colorado Mesa University Men's Soccer Team would close out their road trip to Salt Lake City this afternoon as they would record their first loss of the season in a 2-0 defeat to Cal State University Monterey Bay on Dumke Field.

CMU would win their first game of the trip with a 3-1 victory over Northwest Nazarene University on Sept. 12, before their match with CSUMB today. The Mavs now move to 1-1-1 with the Otters improving to 2-0-1 after tying 1-1 with host team Westminster University, on Sept. 12.

During the match the Otters would score their goals in the 7th and 60th minute with Daniel Perez and Erik Cabrera each tallying one apiece. Perez would add an assist on Cabrera's goal, while Avery Edgar would assist on Perez's goal.

The Mavs threatened to score quickly after the Otter's first goal in the match when a corner kick allowed for a header attempt by Manuel Ponce Casas, but his shot would miss high and bounce off the crossbar.

CMU would only attempt one shot in the first half, before attempting nine more in the second to try and overcome the deficit. CSMB would outshoot the Mavs with 18 shots themselves.

The Otter's goalkeeper would save all six shots on goal attempted against him in the second half.

Ponce Casas led Colorado Mesa with three shots himself, including two on target. Marc Bonafe and Jonah Elstad would each total two shot attempts as well.

Goalkeeper Diego Chavez would total eight saves on the day while facing 10 shots on target.

Colorado Mesa will continue their trend of playing on the road next week as they return to Durango, Colo. to close out their non-conference portion of the schedule with matches against Montana State University and Simon Fraser University at neutral site Dirks Field.

Matches are slated for Sept. 19 at 4:30 pm against MSU Billings and Sept. 21 at 4:30 pm against SFU.
