Mavs Explode Offensively in 3-0 Win

CMU records first shutout of 2024 season

Durango, Colo. - In their second trip back down to Durango for more nonconference action, the Colorado Mesa University Men's Soccer Team took care of business as they would handily beat Montana State University Billings in a 3-0 victory. This match would mark the Mavs' first shutout of the year and tie their game-high in goals with three for the 2024 season.

CMU now raises their record to 2-1-1 while MSUB drops to 1-2-2.

The Mavs' offense would be bolstered by the trio of Stefanos Christodoulakis, Matteo Bonelli and Kensho Negi as each would score once on the day. Both Christodoulakis' and Negi's goals would be the first of their career with the Mavericks. Bonelli's team-leading goal was his second of the season.

Connor Chilson and Marc Bonafe would both tally assists in the win.

Christodoulakis would score the first goal of the match as just four minutes in CMU would be granted a free kick from just outside of the penalty box. Chilson would be the man kicking the ball and, on his attempt, he would fly it off the top left corner of the crossbar which would ricochet in front of Christodoulakis for an easy chip shot to give the Mavs an early 1-0 lead.

The first half would end 1-0 with Colorado Mesa leading, as the team's two other shots on goal would be saved by the Yellowjackets' goalkeeper.

Bonelli would add the Mavs' lead in the 61st minute when a deflected pass allowed for him to score in the top right corner of the net on a bouncing ball off the crossbar. In addition to his team-leading goal, Bonell is also the team's leader in points with five so far.

In the 72nd minute Negi would add an insurance goal as his score came thanks to a service pass from Bonafe across the Penalty Box before ricocheting off a Yellowjacket defender into the back of the net.

Goalkeeper Diego Chavez would total only one save on the day as MSUB would only have one shot on goal out of their nine attempts.

There were multiple stoppages of time during the match as each team played a physical game with MSUB totaling four yellow cards and CMU three.

The Mavs continue their weekend in Durango as they get Friday off before playing again on Saturday, Sept. 21 against Simon Fraser University. Streaming for the match can be watched on the RMAC Network with Live Stats available on our website.
