Trio of Mavs Score in First Victory of Season

Silva, Ponce Casas, and Bonelli each score

Salt Lake City, Utah – Colorado Mesa University came to Salt Lake City in search of their first win of the season after finishing in a draw earlier this week. A handful of goals and some key saves would make that first win possible as CMU would emerge victorious over Northwest Nazarene in a 3-1 win at Dumke Field. With the win CMU now improves to 1-0-1 while NNU drops to 0-2-1.

Three different players would all mark their first goals of the season in today's match as Diogo Silva, Manuel Ponce Casas and Matteo Bonelli would each have one apiece. Ponce Casas' goal would serve as the game-winner with each of the goals all coming unassisted.

Silva would score the first goal of the day in the 10th minute after a CMU corner kick came into the box and ricocheted around before Silva would be the one to find it last as he knocked it into the net to give the Mavs' an early 1-0 lead.

NNU responded quickly to the goal in the 14th minute with Caleb Putney scoring one of his own after he danced through three Maverick defenders to even the game up at 1-1.

The next 15 minutes would have both team's challenge possession, but ultimately it was Ponce Casas who took liberty into his own hands as he would score on a reflected shot off the goalie to give Colorado Mesa the 2-1 lead, and eventually the game-winner. His goal would come in the 30th minute.

At half it was 2-1 CMU, but the Nighthawks would press hard defensively in the second half as they would total all five of their yellow cards and singular red card in the last 45 minutes. CMU would only be totaled with one yellow card in the match.

The red card would be recorded in the 70th minute of the match after NNU's Adam Laarj would receive his second yellow card of the day and render the Nighthawk's down one man. From the 70th minute on it would be 11 v 10 with the Mavs holding the one man advantage.

Daniel Paulsson would log the Mavs' first penalty kick of the season after a rough foul was called in the penalty box, but after a diving save by the Nighthawk's goalie Gerardo Fonte, the score would remain 2-1.

Northwest Nazarene would retaliate almost immediately with a penalty kick opportunity themselves as a foul was called on goalie Diego Chavez after attempting to reel in an errant ball. Chavez too would come up big for his team as he would dive to his left to stop the Nighthawks from evening the score.

Bonelli, who was denied a goal quickly after the red card earlier in the match due to an offsides call, would not let his first shot of the day be denied again when he would score in the 79th minute to raise the Mavs' lead to 3-1. Bonelli has now recorded both an assist and goal thus far this season.

The Nighthawks would challenge once more in the 86th minute with a shot on goal, but Chavez once again would come up with the save.

Chavez would face 14 shots on the day with five of them being on target. He would total four saves while only allowing one goal in the 180 minutes.

Colorado Mesa would take 14 shots in the match with eight of them being on target

CMU will now finish their weekend on Saturday, Sept. 14, when they face off with Cal State Monterey Bay. Game time is slated for 12 p.m. and will take place at Dumke Field as well.
