COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Mesa Head Athletic Trainer Steve Mundee has been named this year's recipient of the Wayne Barger Co-Athletic Trainer of the Year as announced by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference on Wednesday (June 19) morning. Mundee along with Western Colorado's Janine Pleau split this year's honor as voted on by the conference's athletic trainers.

Mundee has been at Colorado Mesa since 2018 and was named the head athletic trainer in since the fall of 2020. During his tenure, he has worked with the Men's Basketball, Swimming and Diving, Cheer, Baseball and Football programs.

He has been instrumental in continuing to improve the care and well-being for the Maverick student-athletes. He has seen his staff grow from six to where it now sits at 11 which leads to more personal care and rehab supervision for the student-athletes. He and his staff helped lead the Mavericks to seven RMAC regular season titles which led to the RMAC All-Sports Cup championship.

Steve earned his B.S. in Athletic Training from the University of Utah in 2014 and his M.S. in Human Performance and Physical Education in 2018 from Adams State.

The Wayne Barger award was first established in the 2017-18 academic school year and was named after former Fort Lewis College Assistant Athletic Director and Director of Sports Medicine, Wayne Barger. Recipients of this honor demonstrate commitment to ideals set forth by the RMAC and member institutions and act ethically to assure proper health and safety for the student-athletes under their care. Each head athletic trainer from around the league submits one vote for this award and is not permitted to vote for themselves.
