LOS ANGELES, Calif.— Brooke Miller broke her own 2-day old school record in the 800 meters as
Elijah Williams likely saw his stellar sprinting career come to a close as an event winner as they,
Josie Coffey and
Christina Palmer all won events for the Colorado Mesa University track and field team at Sunday's Cal State LA's Very Last, Last Chance Meet here at the Golden Eagles' Jesse Owens Track.
The meet was appropriately named and was contested Sunday, the very last day of the qualification window for the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships, which will be contested May 23-25 in Emporia, Kansas.
The qualifiers will be announced on Tuesday.
Miller recorded a time of 2:09.79 to win after she had finished in 2:10.27 on Friday evening at the Franson Last Chance meet in Azusa. She now ranks 31
st on the national performance list, pending any other late Sunday results from around the country, but will likely not be selected for the national championships.
Williams is in the same position, who did run to a time of 10.83 seconds to win the 100 meters while running the 200 in 21.35 seconds to finish third. He also ran on the Mavs' 4x100-meter relay team, which finished in 43.05 seconds. The fifth-year senior from Aurora, Colorado is a 12-time All-RMAC performer and 3-time all-American. He will finish his Maverick career as the CMU record holder in five different indoor and outdoor events.
In the field, Coffey won the high jump with a clearance of 1.70 meters (5-7) as she tuned up for the national meet as the performance list leader.
Hope Matteson also competed in that event, taking third with a mark of 1.65 meters (5-5), just off her career-best of 1.67 meters (5-5.75).
Palmer won the discus throw with a mark of 45.77 meters (150-2) as the Mavericks went 1-2-3 in the event.
Augustine Hancock took second with a career-best 45.12 meters (148-0) for the second straight day. She had turned in a performance of 44.97 meters (147-6) on Saturday at the Azusa Pacific meet and also set a school-record and likely NCAA qualifying mark of 55.88 meters (183-4) in the hammer throw at that meet.
Other notable efforts for the CMU on Sunday, included a second place finish from
Kylee Kielian in the triple jump (11.84 meters/38-10.25), a third place time of 24.38 seconds from
Gaby Horton in the 200 meters. Horton, who is on the bubble for inclusion in the national meet, also helped the Mavs' 4x100-meter relay team to a third place time of 46.61 seconds alongside
Serenity Burnett-Perry,
Sylvia Johansen and
Jordan Burnett, who had all teamed to set a school record on Saturday in Azusa. Burnett-Perry also took fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.64 seconds while Burnett took sixth in the 200 (24.69) after setting the Mavs' 400-meter record on Saturday as well.
Multi-event specialist
Katie Thomson also competed in the triple jump for the first time in more than a year, taking fifth with a mark of 10.56 meters (34-7.75).
Only sprinters were in action for the Maverick men as
Teo Casados took fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.36, just behind Williams.
Justin Blanton also finished third in the 400 with a time of 48.74 seconds while
Beau Thornton, Casados,
Marik Cummings teamed with Williams in the 4x100-meter relay.
Thornton and Cummings also tied for second as individuals in the 100 meters with times of 10.88 seconds while Blanton contested that event for the first time this season, running to a time of 12.11 seconds.
