GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 11 Colorado Mesa baseball team split a doubleheader with the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves on Saturday (Apr. 6) as both teams face a myriad of weather conditions throughout the day.
In the day's opener, both teams faced near whiteout conditions throughout the game, but Colorado Mesa led 7-1 entering the seventh and final inning before the ThunderWolves scored seven unanswered runs and went on to win 8-7.
The Mavericks built their lead beginning in the third inning on an RBI single by
Ethan Nunez. Then, in the fourth inning,
Robert Sharrar belted a three-run home run followed by
Kolby Felix two batters later that hit a solo shot to left center for a 5-0 lead after four complete.
The ThunderWolves got one back in the fifth inning before the Mavericks scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Sharrar extended his hitting streak to 17 games as he went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs driven in.
Nunez finished with two hits.
Cade Nicol (0-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing one run on two hits, walked one and struck out one.
In the night cap, the Mavericks mounted another one of their come from behind victories as they trailed by two entering the fifth inning before claiming a 5-3 win over the ThunderWolves.
CSU Pueblo took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a home run before a bases loaded walk in the bottom half by Rob Sharrar cut into the Pack lead and made it 2-1 after two complete.
CSU Pueblo extended their lead with another home run, this time a solo shot in the third made it 3-1.
The Mavericks scored four unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings for the 5-3 advantage.
Jonathan Gonzalez tied the game at 3-3 after a two-run single in the fifth followed by an RBI single by
Max Valdez gave the Mavericks a 4-3 edge heading to the sixth. There,
Christos Stefanos gave the Mavericks some cushion with a RBI single through the left side of the infield for the 5-3 lead.
In the top of the seventh,
Jordan Ellison faced three batters before leaving with an injury.
JJ Almeda came on to retire the final two batters of the game, both striking them out looking to earn his third save of the season.
Stefanos and Gonzalez both finished the game with two hits.
Cole Seward earned the win on the mound to move his record to 5-0 on the season. He allowed three runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out eight in five innings of work.
The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday with a single nine-inning game beginning at Noon from The Diamond.
