GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 11 Colorado Mesa baseball team opened Sergio Romo Weekend with a win over the visiting CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves 16-12 on Friday (Apr. 5) evening at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex.
Colorado Mesa took the early lead in the game in the second inning as
Christos Stefanos hit a solo home run to left center field for the 1-0 advantage.
CSU Pueblo plated five in the fourth to overtake the Mavericks for the moment but, an
Ethan Nunez two-run homer in the fifth and a 6-run sixth inning gave the Mavericks a 9-5 lead after six complete innings.
The Mavericks regained the lead for good in the eighth inning as Stefanos had a two-run single to left field for the 11-9.
Max Berni delivered a two-run single later in the inning and was capped off by a
Declan Wiesner no-doubter to left center field for the 16-9 lead.
Robert Sharrar extended his hitting streak to 16-games with a single in the sixth inning.
Stefanos finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three runs driven in while Wiesner went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two runs driven in.
Usually a reliever, junior righthander
Evan Bunevich made his first start of the spring and gave the Mavericks a chance to win. He didn't factor into the decision as he went six innings and allowed five runs (four earned runs) on eight hits, walked three and struck out three on 105 pitches.
Ethan Voss earned the win to move to 4-1 on the season. Voss surrendered the lead in the top of the eighth but was also the pitcher when the Mavericks took the lead in the bottom half of the inning.
The Mavericks and ThunderWolves will continue the series tomorrow beginning at 1:00pm with a pair of seven inning contests.
NOTE: Former Maverick and three-time World Series champion Sergio Romo had his professional number 54 retired on the outfield wall at the Diamond prior to the game. He also threw out the first pitch.
