GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –
Liam Hohenstein pitched the No. 11 Colorado Mesa baseball team to a 9-1 victory over the visiting New Mexico Highlands Cowboys on Friday (Apr. 26) evening at a very damp Suplizio Field.
The sophomore is gaining momentum heading into the final stretch of the season and Friday evening's performance added to that. Hohenstein pitched seven shutout innings and allowed just three hits while striking out a season-high 11 to move his record to 6-1 on the season.
Hohenstein struck out the side in the third inning and didn't allow a hit until there were two outs in the fifth inning. He also got plenty of run support in the effort.
The Mavericks scored six in the first on just three hits and benefitted from three walks in the inning.
Ethan Nunez and
TJ Rheem delivered RBI singles while the other runs scored on two balks and a fielder's choice.
Braden Winget extended the Mavericks lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the third. Winget 's third home run of the season was a no doubter to left field on a 3-1 pitch, giving the Mavericks a 7-0 lead.
Colorado Mesa tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning. Winget singled through the left side that scored Rheem on the play then two batters later
Robert Sharrar drove him in on a double to left center field to make it 9-0.
Winget and Rheem were the lone Mavericks with multiple hits in the game.
