LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The No. 11 Colorado Mesa baseball team split a doubleheader with the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys on a soggy Saturday (Apr. 27) afternoon at The Diamond.
In game one of the day,
Cole Seward had a quality start, but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks could only scratch out four hits and committed six errors in a 3-1 loss to the Cowboys.
Cole Seward dropped his first game of the season after pitching a complete game and allowed three runs (all unearned) on four hits, walked four and struck out six in 104 pitches. Seward ran into trouble in the sixth inning when he faced second and third with nobody out and was able to wiggle off the hook and didn't allow a run to give his team a chance.
The Mavericks lone run in the game came in the bottom of the sixth as
Paul Schoenfeld drove in
TJ Rheem on a sacrifice fly to left field. They had opportunities to score more in the frame but stranded the bases loaded.
After roughly an hour delay for rain, the two teams would play the nightcap and battled through soggy conditions. Colorado Mesa scored in five of the six innings they batted in a 12-1 win over New Mexico Highlands to split the day.
The Mavericks plated two in the first and then broke it open in the second inning.
Robert Sharrar stroked a two-run double that scored
Declan Wiesner and
Braden Winget then three batters later
Christos Stefanos smoked a three-run double down the left field line for a 7-0 lead after two innings.
In the third inning, Wiesner delivered the only home run of the day. The junior backstop sent an 0-1 pitch into the Maverick bullpen beyond the fence in left field to give his team an 8-0 lead.
Braden Winget hit an RBI double in the fourth while Schoenfeld had a two-run double in the fifth to extend the lead to 11-1. Stefanos also added to his RBI total in the game in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to make it 12-1.
Stefanos finished the game 2-for-2 with four runs driven in while Schoenfeld went 1-for-1 with three runs scored, two runs driven in, and drew three walks.
Sharrar was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
The big lefty
Caleb Ruter picked up his third win of the season on the mound. Ruter pitched four shutout innings and scattered five hits, walked two and struck out five in 91 pitches to earn his third win of the season.
Ethan Voss earned the rule book save after pitching the final three innings of the game. He allowed one run on four hits and struck out four for his third save of the year.
The two teams will conclude the series with a single nine-inning game on Sunday beginning at Noon.
