DENVER – Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse was unable to overcome a strong first quarter by the No. 7-ranked Regis Rangers, losing 16-7 in the second-to-last RMAC game of the regular season.
Justine Anderson and
Elizabeth Renken each scored twice to lead the offensive output for the Mavericks.
Shannon Murphy made seven saves in goal for CMU.
The Mavericks, who saw their four-game winning streak snapped, fall to 8-5 overall and 7-2 in the RMAC, with both losses coming to Regis. The Rangers clinched the RMAC regular season title and No. 1 seed in the conference tournament with the victory.
With one RMAC game left on CMU's schedule, the Mavericks are one-and-a-half games back of Regis for first and two games up on Westminster for third, so the Mavs are locked in to second place in the conference standings and will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming RMAC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season.
The Rangers outshot the Mavericks 28-14 and dominated draw controls with an 18-7 edge. Regis also created free position opportunities, going 2-for-9 on free position shots while the Mavericks could only manage to go 0-for-1. The Mavs did force 22 Regis turnovers while committing 23, and both teams scooped 18 ground balls each.
Regis, coming off a dominant 23-0 win over Westminster on Friday, jumped all over Colorado Mesa in the first quarter. The Rangers outscored CMU 9-1 in the opening 15 minutes, outshooting them 12-1. Regis's Maggie Schipfer scored the first goal of the game two-and-a-half minutes in, and while the Mavs quickly responded with an unassisted goal from
Peyton Ivey a minute after, Regis opened the floodgates with eight consecutive goals to take a big lead.
Justine Anderson scored twice in the second quarter, with her two goals bookending three Regis tallies as the home team went into halftime with a 12-2 lead. Renken found the net twice, once in the third quarter and once in the fourth, before
Devon Morris (featuring the first collegiate assist for
Monroe McClimans) and
Emme Rezoski scored in the game's final 1:30.
The Mavericks got near buzzer-beating goals in both halves, with Anderson finding the net with three seconds remaining in the first half and Rezoski taking advantage of a man-up situation to score with one second left in the game.
Colorado Mesa has two more regular season games on its schedule. The Mavericks will host nonconference opponent Dominican (3-6) on Friday at noon before closing out the RMAC season against local rivals Westminster on Sunday at 2 p.m. The RMAC Tournament, now assured to be in Denver, will be the following weekend on May 3 and 5.
