Offense Carries Mavs To Win Over Dominican

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse kept up the offensive pressure throughout the game, scoring a season-high 19 goals in a 19-10 win over Dominican University of California.

Justine Anderson scored six goals, her fourth time this season with six or more, while Carson Dickey added four goals and Sofia Chock scored her first career hat trick. Caroline Ohngemach had four assists for the Mavericks while Dickey added three of her own to finish with seven points on the night.

The win improves the Mavericks to 9-5 overall while the Penguins fall to 3-8. The Mavs will close out their regular season schedule against RMAC rivals Westminster on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Colorado Mesa outshot Dominican 41-30 and grabbed 20 out of 34 draw controls. Shannon Murphy made a season-high 14 saves, two off her career high of 16, and the CMU defense allowed five free position goals in 11 attempts but only five goals from open play.

The Mavericks built a first-half lead which allowed them to remain ahead by a comfortable margin even though Dominican's attack began to keep pace with CMU's in the second half. The Mavericks scored five goals in each of the first two quarters while holding the Penguins to just three first-half tallies.

Carson Dickey came out on fire. The sophomore and Murrieta, California native put the Mavericks on the board with a goal three minutes into the game off an assist from Ali Bryant, who scored herself unassisted 43 seconds later. Dickey then assisted on each of Colorado Mesa's next three goals, setting up Emme Rezoski, Justine Anderson and Sofia Chock in succession as the Mavs ended the first quarter with a 5-2 lead.

Caroline Ohngemach took over the assist mantle from Dickey in the second quarter, serving as the playmaker for all three of CMU's five second-period goals that had any assist at all. Peyton Ivey and Justine Anderson each scored woman-up unassisted goals while Dickey, Anderson and Chock all scored off assists from Ohngemach. Colorado Mesa led 10-3 at halftime.

Dominican traded blows with CMU in the third quarter, with each team scoring four times in alternating fashion. Anderson's fourth goal featured Ohngemach's fourth assist while Elizabeth Renken, Dickey and Anderson's fifth followed with goals, all unassisted.

Anderson added her only assist of the game on Dickey's fourth to open up the Maverick scoring in the fourth quarter. Dominican scored back-to-back to cut the deficit to just five at 15-10, but Colorado Mesa closed on a 4-0 scoring run. Chock completed her hat trick with an unassisted goal with 7:41 to play, as her third of the game doubled her season total to give the freshman six for the season.

A deluge of late-game cards granted CMU several woman-up opportunities which the Mavericks converted. The Mavs' last three goals (scored by Anderson, Devon Morris and Rezoski) all came with a player advantage. The game featured 19 cards in total, with 10 (eight green, two yellow) going to CMU and nine (five green, four yellow) given to Dominican.

Rezoski finished the game with nine draw controls, her third-highest single game total this season, and scored multiple goals for the first time this season and the second time in her career.

Sophomore defender Izzy Whitt, making her eighth appearance and first start of the season, forced three caused turnovers and now has five CTs in her last two games.

Colorado Mesa will remain at home this weekend, finishing the RMAC and regular seasons against Westminster on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Mavericks (7-2 RMAC) are locked into the conference's No. 2 seed while the Griffins (6-7, 5-4 RMAC) can clinch the No. 3 seed with a win or a UCCS loss to Fort Lewis and will fall to No. 4 if neither of those things happen.
