Ohngemach's OT Winner Downs Mountain Lions

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Caroline Ohngemach's overtime winner allowed Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse to survive a late UCCS surge and lifted the Mavericks to a 12-11 victory on Friday afternoon.

Carson Dickey scored a career-high six goals, Madi Kruis and Elizabeth Renken added two more apiece while Ali Bryant secured the vital draw control in overtime that allowed the Mavs to win it on the first possession of the extra period.

The win improves CMU's record to 8-4 overall and 7-1 in the RMAC with two conference games and three total games left to play in the regular season. The Mavs remain a half game behind undefeated Regis for first place in the RMAC standings and two games ahead of Westminster, who CMU will face in the regular season finale, for third.

The stats were fittingly close for a game that went down to the wire, as both teams finished with 30 total shots. Colorado Mesa had 28 ground balls to UCCS's 25 and won 17 draw controls compared to the home team's 10. The Mavericks converted 2 of 3 free position shots while the Mountain Lions went 5-for-8.

Dickey, whose six goals doubled her previous career high of three, had set a new career high by the end of the first quarter as the sophomore scored CMU's first four goals of the game, alternating with three UCCS tallies as the Mavericks held a one-goal lead after 15 minutes. Dickey's breakout performance came on a day that Justine Anderson, the RMAC's leading goal scorer, was held scoreless for just the second time this season and first time since CMU's season-opening loss to Grand Valley State. Anderson had two assists.

The second quarter of the game was a defensive struggle, as the two teams combined for 13 turnovers and just 10 shots in period two. An Elizabeth Renken goal with 11:15 left in the second quarter and an Ella Freemon goal with a minute and a half left until halftime gave the Mavericks a three-goal lead heading into the break.

The Mountain Lions turned the tide of the game in the second half, scoring four of the first five goals in the second half to tie the score at 7-7, which would be the first of four ties in the second half. Dickey's sixth goal of the game made it 10-9 Mavericks with just under seven minutes to go, but UCCS's leading goal scorer Julia Patrick netted her fourth of the game to tie things back up.

A costly yellow card by Patrick two minutes later granted the Mavericks a woman-up opportunity, which CMU converted via Madi Kruis from Peyton Ivey to take an 11-10 lead, but the Mountain Lions stunned the Mavs with a goal with nine seconds remaining to send CMU to an extra period for the first time since nearly a year ago to date in the Mavs' historic upset win over Regis last season.

The Mavs possessed the ball for an extended period of time after winning the draw in OT, twice nearly throwing the ball away but recovering to be the first to the loose ball. Ohngemach received a pass from Peyton Ivey, who had three second-half assists, and spun to her right before throwing the ball across goal in a skip shot that got past the UCCS goalie.

Colorado Mesa maintains its unbeaten record over UCCS with the win, as the Mavericks are now 12-0 all-time against the Mountain Lions. Friday's matchup was the first time the margin of victory had been less than two goals.

The Mavericks will return to the field on Sunday against No. 7 Regis at 12:30 p.m. With a win, CMU would move a half-game ahead of the Rangers into first place in the RMAC standings.
