Mavs Score 14 Unanswered In Win Over Pueblo

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse scored 14 unanswered goals over nearly 50 minutes of game time as Caroline Ohngemach's seven points led the Mavericks in a 16-3 win over CSU Pueblo from Community Hospital Unity Field.

Ohngemach scored three goals with a game-high four assists, as the junior set single-game career highs in assists and points. Justine Anderson scored four times, Amber Wennerstrom scored her first hat trick in over three years and Monroe McClimans scored the first two goals of her college career in the victory.

CMU outshot CSU Pueblo 42-13 and scored 16 goals despite going 0-for-8 on free position shots. Shannon Murphy made six saves in net for the Mavs while CSUP goalie Breonna Mason made 12 saves for the Pack. A game after setting Colorado Mesa's career program caused turnovers record, Kelsey Viger set a personal career-high and tied the program single-game career high with seven caused turnovers.

Colorado Mesa improves to 7-4 overall and 6-1 in the RMAC, and they have won three in a row since their lone conference setback to Regis. CSU Pueblo falls to 2-9 and 0-7 in the RMAC with the loss.

The Mavericks controlled possession and were relentless in their defense. Despite a relatively slim advantage of 12-9 in draw controls, the Mavericks forced 25 turnovers and grabbed 30 ground balls to CSUP's 16. Colorado Mesa went a perfect 22-for-22 on clear attempts while the Pack were only 16-for-23.

The ThunderWolves got off to a good start. After Wennerstrom got the Mavericks on the board 48 seconds into the game, CSU Pueblo scored back-to-back goals via Reese Wasmund and Sedona Sargent to take a 2-1 lead over the Mavs. The outright lead was short lived, however, as Justine Anderson scored her 36th goal of the season just 33 seconds later to tie the score at 2-2.

The goal was unassuming at the time, as neither team would score for the next three-and-a-half minutes. But as it turned out, Anderson's goal would kick off a 14-0 scoring run for CMU as the Mavericks would hold the ThunderWolves scoreless until there were under two minutes to play in the game.

Colorado Mesa scored three times in a minute late in the first quarter, with Amber Wennerstrom, Ella Fremon and Anderson finding the net and Peyton Ivey assisting on the latter two goals as CMU led 5-2 after a quarter. The Mavericks kept it rolling early in the second period, with freshman Sofia Chock scored just over a minute in before Wennerstrom and Ohngemach scored just 20 seconds apart and Anderson completed her hat trick a minute after that. Despite being held scoreless for the final 11 minutes of the first half, CMU went into halftime with a 9-2 lead.

Kelsey Viger kicked things off in the second half by pulling off the trifecta of caused turnover, ground ball and unassisted goal to put the Mavs up 10-2 with 10:41 to play in the third quarter. McClimans scored twice in the fourth quarter, once off a feed from Devon Morris and once on Ohngemach's fourth assist. McClimans, a true freshman, also caused a turnover and corralled two ground balls and a draw control in the contest.

After CSU Pueblo scored to break CMU's scoring streak at 15-3, Ohngemach scored her seventh and final point of the afternoon by fighting through traffic to scoop up an elusive draw control which bounced around so much that Ohngemach had a one-on-one breakaway with the goalie by the time she gained control. Ohngemach coolly finished over the goalkeeper's right shoulder to find the net with 20 seconds remaining and effectively end the game since a running clock was in effect due to CMU's 10-goal-plus lead.

Freshman backup goalkeeper Sophia Bailey made her first appearance of the season and her career for the final 7:38 of game time in relief of Maverick stalwart Shannon Murphy. Bailey allowed one goal and did not make a save.

Colorado Mesa is in action next on the road against UCCS on Friday at 4 p.m. and Regis on Sunday at noon.
