GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The standout players for Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse did not disappoint during a 17-6 win over Fort Lewis that saw records fall and the Mavs improve to 5-1 in the RMAC.
Justine Anderson scored a career-high seven goals while
Kelsey Viger and
Emme Rezoski both set program records as CMU defeated Fort Lewis for the 13
th consecutive time. The Mavs and Skyhawks were tied 3-3 after one quarter, but CMU outscored Fort Lewis 8-1 in the second half and scored the final six goals of the game to eventually win by double digits.
Kelsey Viger became the school's all-time caused turnovers leader with a dominant performance worthy of the RMAC Defensive Player of the Year honor that she won last season. Viger, who needed just one caused turnover in Friday's match to break a tie with alum Olivia Hayden for the program record, finished with five caused turnovers to match a single-game career high and also scooped a career-high eight ground balls.
The redshirt senior now has 135 career caused turnovers and counting. She ranks third all-time in CMU history with 153 career ground balls, five behind Erin Koehler for second place and 51 behind Hayden for first.
Emme Rezoski set a CMU single-game record with 17 draw controls, smashing Hayden's previous mark of 14 against Westminster from April 2019. Rezoski now has 29 draw controls in Colorado Mesa's last two games after snaring 12 in CMU's win over UCCS last weekend. Rezoski's big night helped Colorado Mesa to an overall 22-5 advantage in draw controls over Fort Lewis for the game.
After setting a new career high with six goals twice previously this season, Anderson scored seven for the first time in her collegiate career. The sophomore, who entered the game leading the RMAC in goals per game, scored two in the first quarter, three in the second quarter and one apiece in each of the third and fourth quarters.
Anderson added an assist for her second eight-point game of the season. She is the sixth CMU player to score exactly seven goals in a game while alum Ashley Eickhoff holds the single-game record with eight goals against the University of Puget Sound (DIII) in 2014.
Behind the record-breakers,
Elizabeth Renken finished with a goal and three assists for CMU while
Peyton Ivey and
Carson Dickey both scored twice.
Shannon Murphy made four saves in net for the Mavs as CMU enjoyed a 39-22 shots advantage while forcing 23 Fort Lewis turnovers and limiting the Skyhawks to just 19-for-29 on clear attempts.
Fort Lewis, which fell to 2-8 and 1-5 in the RMAC with the loss, played tough at the beginning of the game. The Skyhawks took first-quarter leads of 2-1 and 3-2 before Anderson's second goal tied the score at 3-3 prior to the end of the first period.
The second period was all Mavericks. After unassisted goals from Ivey and Dickey,
Cameron Flynn tallied her first three points of the season by assisting Anderson and
Emme Rezoski before scoring herself off a pass from
Amber Wennerstrom. The goals from Rezoski and Flynn made it back-to-back tallies by players scoring their first goals of the season.
Anderson scored twice more before halftime to help the Mavericks carry an 11-4 lead into the break. Fort Lewis scored the first two goals of the second half to trim the Mav advantage to 11-6, but CMU scored three unanswered goals in the third and three more in the fourth to close out the victory.
Colorado Mesa, now 6-4 overall with the 5-1 RMAC record, will remain at home to face CSU Pueblo on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The ThunderWolves entered the day at 2-7 overall and 0-5 in the RMAC.
