Mavericks Come Up Short In RMAC Finals

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa couldn't maintain a hot start and a 60 percent shooting night from Fort Lewis led to an 86-75 Skyhawks win in the RMAC Tournament championship. The Skyhawks have now won two RMAC Tournament titles in a row and six overall.

The Mavericks received 23 points, nine rebounds and three blocks from RMAC Player of the Year Trevor Baskin, who shot 9 of 10 from the field and 4 of 5 from three-point range in the loss. Christopher Speller scored 16 points, Isaac Jessup tallied eight points and seven rebounds and Elijah Knudsen finished with nine points after hitting three triples.

RMAC Tournament MVP Obi Agbim, a first-team All-RMAC selection, scored a career-high 33 points in a brilliant effort for Fort Lewis while Junior Garbrah scored 14 points.

Feeding off the energy of a sold-out Brownson Arena, Colorado Mesa came out on fire, outscoring Fort Lewis 12-0 over the first four minutes of game time. Reece Johnson, making just his sixth start of the season, opened the scoring with a dunk off an assist from Baskin before Baskin hit back-to-back fast break layups.

A Baskin three-pointer forced a Fort Lewis timeout with 16:43 remaining in the first half and an Isaac Jessup three gave CMU a 12-0 lead heading into the under-16 media timeout. By the time Baskin scored on a putback with 15:09 left in the first half, CMU led 17-2 having made seven of its first 10 field goal attempts.

Fort Lewis was ultimately unfazed. The Skyhawks, who trailed by over 10 points in all three of their RMAC Tournament victories this season, eventually wore down the Mavericks with their high-energy defensive press and continued to hit tough, contested shots down the stretch.

The Skyhawks completely flipped the script during the latter stages of the first half as the Mavericks, who only went 13-for-42 from three-point range, got cold offensively and started to turn the ball over more frequently. Fort Lewis led by 13 at halftime, 47-34.

The Mavericks did their best to stay in the game, but Fort Lewis made big shots when they needed to, not allowing the Mavericks to get out in transition. Agbim took over, scoring 21 of his 33 in the second half, which included several heavily contested midrange jumpers and threes. Colorado Mesa committed 11 of its 19 turnovers in the second half, giving extra possessions to the Skyhawks, who shot a phenomenal 67 percent from the field and 75 percent from three in half number two.

Colorado Mesa did outrebound Fort Lewis 29-28 and blocked nine shots on the evening compared to the Skyhawks' two. The Mavericks shot 52 percent from the field in the second half and 44 percent for the game.

Trevor Baskin and Owen Koonce made the RMAC All-Tournament Team, alongside Fort Lewis's Obi Agbim, Amondo Miller, Jr., Brayden Carter and Isaiah Thompson, Black Hills State's Matthew Ragsdale and Colorado School of Mines' Majok Deng.

With the result, Colorado Mesa falls to 3-9 all-time in RMAC Tournament finals. Although they will miss out on the conference's automatic qualifying bid, the Mavericks are all but a lock to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. They will learn their seed and opponent, as well as the destination of the South Central regional, during the Division II selection show this Sunday at 9 p.m. (MT) on NCAA.com.
