DENVER, Colo. – The No. 13 Colorado Mesa Mavericks secured an important series win as they defeated the Regis Rangers 18-6 in eight innings on Saturday (Mar. 30) at Regis Baseball Field. The Mavericks took three of the four games from the Rangers who were in second place in the standings entering the weekend.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning after scoring all six runs with two outs in the inning.
Kennedy Hara drove in the game's first run with a single to left and was followed by a two-run single by
TJ Rheem who earned the start at first base today.
The final blow of the inning came off the bat of
Jonathan Gonzalez who delivered a three-run home run to left field off a 1-0 count.
Colorado Mesa got three more in the next inning after benefitting from a big Regis error.
Kennedy Hara would have been the third out of the inning but instead advanced on an error which brought a run home then Rheem stepped to the plate and hit a two-run double down the left field line to make it 9-1 after three complete innings.
The run of scoring innings for the Mavericks continued in the fourth inning as
Robert Sharrar led the inning off with a home run. They added more later in the inning on a RBI single by
Ethan Nunez and a sacrifice fly by
Max Valdez to make 12-1 after four.
Sharrar kept the scoring streak going in the fifth as he hit his second home run of the game, a no doubter on the first pitch he saw. It was his 12
th home run of the season and gave the Mavericks a 13-1 lead heading to the sixth.
The Rangers would plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the game.
Colorado Mesa scored five runs in the top of the eighth off a pair of bases loaded walks, a bases loaded wild pitch and a two-run single by pinch hitter
Josh Romans to make it 18-3.
Regis scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning, but it wasn't enough to keep the game from ending early.
Sharrar, Rheem, and Hara all finished with multiple hits.
Tristan Wolf got the start on the mound and picked up the win. He allowed one run on thre hits, walked five and struck out three in five innings of work. It was his longest outing of the season and the second fewest hits he has allowed on the season.
The Mavericks will return home next weekend for an important RMAC series as they host the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves on Friday April 5 for a four-game series. The weekend will also be Sergio Romo weekend where the former Maverick will return to Grand Junction for a barrage of festivities.
