GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team used a pair of come-from-behind victories to secure the doubleheader sweep of the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on Sunday (Mar. 17) afternoon at The Diamond at The Bus Bergman Sports Complex.
In game one of the day, the Mavericks trailed 7-1 after an inning and a half but came back to defeat the Orediggers 15-9 as they scored in every inning they batted in.
Derek Shaver got the scoring going in the Mavericks seven-run second inning with his first home run of the season. His home run went out to left field in a hurry and scored leadoff batter of the inning
Declan Wiesner who reached on a hit by pitch.
After a strikeout and back-to-back walks, the Mavericks hit three consecutive doubles by
Ethan Nunez,
Kolby Felix and
Christos Stefanos that knotted the game at 7-7.
Wiesner came back around to drive in the seventh run of the inning on a single that scored Stefanos to take the 8-7 lead.
Kolby Felix delivered one of the finishing blows in the bottom of the fifth as he hit a two-run home run to make it 14-9.
Nunez went 5-for-5 with two runs scored, five runs driven in, and two doubles in by far his biggest output as a Maverick. Felix, Wiesner, Shaver, and
Max Berni all finished with a multi-hit game.
Ethan Voss picked up the win in relief as he pitched the final three and two-thirds innings of shutout baseball to finish the game. Voss (1-1) allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out one on 45 pitches.
In the nightcap, the two teams hit a combined seven home runs, but the Mavericks managed to hit seven of those and once again came from behind for an 11-9 win and secured the daily sweep.
The Orediggers scored four runs in the first before Colorado Mesa even came to the plate. The Mavericks hot a pair of solo home runs in the bottom half of the inning with
Robert Sharrar hitting the first of two home runs on the day and
Ethan Nunez continuing his torrid hitting with his fourth home run of the season.
After a back-and-forth second and third inning, Colorado Mesa trailed 6-4 entering the fifth inning, Sharrar stepped to the plate and hit his second home run of the game to right field to cut the lead to one at 6-5.
Mines looked to have delivered a big blow in the top of the sixth inning as they plated four runs in the frame with the Mavericks coming to the plate.
Colorado Mesa was able to plate six runs n the bottom half of the inning.
Max Berni delivered the first blow with a RBI double that brought around
Derek Shaver who reached on an error with one out. Two batters later,
Caleb Thomason doubled home Berni to make it 9-7 with one out in the inning.
The next batter up in the inning was
Ethan Nunez who inched the Mavericks closer with an RBI single to right field that brought home
Robert Sharrar.
Then,
Kolby Felix stepped to the plate. The sophomore hammered an 0-1 pitch he saw over the fence in left center field for a three-run home run which gave the Mavericks the 11-9 advantage. It was Felix's third home run of the season and second home run of the day.
Junior
JJ Almeda came in and earned his second save of the season in the seventh. He allowed a leadoff walk but was able to retire the next three batters in order.
Spye Turnbeaugh was credited with the win as he recorded one out in the top half of the sixth inning.
Colorado Mesa and Colorado School of Mines will conclude their series on Monday afternoon with a single nine-inning game beginning at 12pm from The Diamond.
