Shannon Murphy made 10 saves and Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse gave head coach
Ashley Delaney her first career victory in a 16-7 road triumph over Fort Lewis.
The win moves the Mavericks to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in RMAC play. CMU's 16 goals more than doubled its output in the previous two games combined, and the defense held its opponent to a season-low in scoring.
Elizabeth Renken scored her first career hat trick in the contest, while Anderson's four goals tied a career high.
Caroline Ohngemach and
Carson Dickey scored two goals apiece for the Mavs, while
Peyton Ivey,
Courtney Havel,
Devon Morris,
Ali Bryant and
Kelsey Viger all scored one goal in the victory.
The Mavericks outshot Fort Lewis 37-22 with a 23-17 edge in shots on goal. Colorado Mesa corralled 16 draw controls compared to FLC's 11 and also had a 22-17 advantage in ground balls, led by four from Murphy and three apiece from Viger and
Larkin Daly. Viger also totaled four caused turnovers.
Colorado Mesa went 23-for-25 on clear attempts over the course of the game, forcing four unsuccessful Fort Lewis clears out of the hosts' 21 attempts. Unlike the previous two games, the Mavericks excelled at earning free position opportunities, going 4-for-12 on free-position shots while the Skyhawks went 0-for-2.
Fort Lewis opened the scoring just shy of three minutes into the game, but the Mavericks answered immediately with unanswered goals from Renken, Ohngemach, Dickey, Havel and Ivey. Colorado Mesa led 7-3 at halftime after second-quarter goals from Anderson and Bryant.
The Mavs went on another extended goalscoring run throughout most of the third quarter, with Renken, Morris, Dickey and Anderson (twice) all scoring within a seven-minute span to run the CMU lead up to 13-4. Haley Dostie had four goals in the loss for Fort Lewis.
Colorado Mesa will head over to CSU Pueblo for their second RMAC contest of the season against the ThunderWolves on Sunday. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
