PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse used a big second quarter to race out to an insurmountable lead against CSU Pueblo for a 15-4 victory over the ThunderWolves.
The Mavericks outscored CSU Pueblo 7-0 in the second quarter and led 12-2 at halftime. The win is CMU's second in three days and moves the Mavs' record up to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the RMAC.
Six different Maverick players scored two goals in the game:
Justine Anderson,
Ali Bryant,
Sofia Chock,
Carson Dickey,
Courteney Murray and
Caroline Ohngemach. It was the first career college goals and points for both Chock and Murray, as well as sophomore
Ella Freemon, who scored once.
After
Justine Anderson scored two goals sandwiched around Freemon's tally to give CMU a 3-0 lead in the game's first six-and-a-half minutes, CSU Pueblo's Baylee Mee scored twice to bring the ThunderWolves within one at 7:27 left in the first quarter. The ThunderWolves would not score again before 11:40 remaining in the fourth quarter.
During that span, the Mavericks scored 11 unanswered goals.
Carson Dickey assisted Ohngemach to make it 4-2 before scoring two of CMU's next four tallies. The freshmen got in on the action late in the second quarter, with Chock scoring back-to-back goals with 8:20 and 4:02 left in the first half and Murray scoring twice in the half's final minute.
The Mavericks slowed down the pace offensively in the second half, taking just 17 of their 49 shots after the break. The Mavs doubled up CSU Pueblo in turnovers, forcing 32 while committing just 16. Colorado Mesa also went a perfect 21-for-21 on clears while the ThunderWolves went just 18-for-32.
Colorado Mesa completes a three-game road trip this Wednesday with a trip to Kansas City to play Rockhurst before returning home for a key regional showdown with nationally-ranked UIndy on Sunday, September 24.
