*Reminder, this weekend's series will now begin on Saturday at 2:00pm*
SERIES HISTORY
Colorado Mesa will take on the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers this weekend at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex in a four-game series beginning on Saturday due to inclement weather.
The Mavericks are 114-20 all-time against the Orediggers and are currently riding a seven-game winning streak in the series. They are 64-6 in Grand Junction with the last Oredigger win in Grand Junction occurring during the 2017 season.
Colorado Mesa won all five matchups during the 2023 season with the final one occurring in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament, a 4-2 Maverick win.Â
SCOUTING THE OREDIGGERS
Colorado School of Mines sits all alone at the top of the RMAC standings after the first week of conference play as they swept the Colorado Christian Cougars in Golden. They have three teams chasing them at 3-1 which includes Colorado Mesa.
Oredigger Mason Andrews was the RMAC and NCBWA South Central Region Player of the Week after batting .750 in the series with 10 runs scored and 12 driven in. He had a slugging percentage over 2.250 and five home runs last week.
Luke Folsom leads the staff with a 3.52 ERA in 23 innings pitched with 20 strikeouts. In his first outing of the spring, he went five innings and struck out six in a win.Â
SHA-RAWR
Preseason All-American Rob Sharrar had a slow start to the season but really came on strong during the series win over MSU Denver on the Front Range this past weekend. The Newbury Park, Calif. native raised his batting average from .296 to begin the weekend and now sits at .342 to begin the homestand.
Sharrar finished the MSU Denver weekend hitting .474 (9-for-19) with seven runs scored, two doubles, three home runs and eight runs driven in. He had an OPS above 1.500 and an on-base percentage of .474.
GOING GONZO
Colorado Mesa got one of their injured players back during Sunday's doubleheader with the Roadrunners as second baseman Jonathan Gonzalez was inserted back in the lineup and the senior did not miss a beat.
Gonzalez proceeded to hit .500 (5-for-10) in the three games he started. He had a double, a triple, four runs driven in and three stolen bases in the series.
For the season, he is hitting a team-leading .463 with two doubles, a triple and a home run with eight runs driven in. He is second on the team with four stolen bases.
STEADY AS HE GOES
Junior righty Cole Seward continues to be the leader on the mound as he is now 3-0 with a team-leading 2.42 ERA. He has made a start each weekend the Mavericks have played (he did not travel to the two-game series at Azusa Pacific.) He has pitched at least five innings and allowed no more than eight hits in each of his starts this season.
This past weekend, Seward limited the Roadrunner offense to just three runs, their lowest run output since February 16 when they lost to Sioux Falls 6-3 and tied for the lowest run total of the season for MSU Denver.
KEYS TO THE ARM BARN
Newcomers Ethan Voss and JJ Almeda have been two keys to the Mavericks bullpen thus far. Voss, a junior transfer from Crowder College, and Almeda, a junior transfer from Cerritos College, are tied among for the team lead in appearances and each has recorded a save.
Each of the two rightys are among the top-4 on the team in strikeouts and both are allowing their opponents to hit below .280 on the season.
OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION
Colorado Mesa really got their offense going in the series win over MSU Denver. Two of their three biggest offensive games came in the series as they scored 16 runs in their second win of the series and a season-high 20 runs in the series finale on Monday.
For totals in the series, Colorado Mesa batted .372 with 11 doubles, eight home runs and 49 runs scored. They walked 17 times, stole nine bases and committed just three errors on the weekend.
