Mavericks Claim Series with Big Win in Finale

DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team earned the series win over the MSU Denver Roadrunners after coming away with a 20-5, mercy-rule, shortened game on Monday (Mar. 11) afternoon at the Assembly Athletic Conference to close out the conference opening weekend.

The Mavericks exploded for 20 runs on 18 hits which include eight extra base-hits. They scored in six of the eight innings they played in with every Maverick starter recording a run scored.

Robert Sharrar and Jonathan Gonzalez each finished the game with three hits and three runs scored.

Sharrar had a big breakout game as all three of his hits went for extra bases and included a pair of round trippers. He hit a two-run shot in the second which helped the Mavericks to a 4-1 lead at the time. Then, an inning later he hit a grand slam that was a part of Colorado Mesa's six-run third inning.

Max Valdez was one of five players that had two hits in the game. He batted over .500 in the series and had an on-base percentage north of .680. He finished today's game 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two runs driven in and three walks.

Designated hitter Christos Stefanos went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and five runs driven in. In the eighth inning, he hammered a grand slam to right field to push the score to 20-5 and was a part of the Mavericks seven run eighth inning.

Brent Renteria, Kolby Felix, and Kennedy Hara all had two hits as well.

Spye Turnbeaugh was credited with the win having thrown just two pitches but recorded two outs as he was able to get Cal Walsh to hit into a double play.  It was the redshirt junior's first win on the mound in his collegiate career.

Six pitchers saw action on the mound with Tristan Wolf earning his first start as a Maverick. Wolf went three innings and allowed three runs on four hits, walked one and struck out four while not factoring into the decision.

The Mavericks will return home for the conference opening series on Friday as they host Colorado School of Mines for four games at The Diamond. Friday's series opener is set for 6:05pm.
