SALT LAKE CITY – Colorado Mesa scored over 100 points for the second time in its past three games, using a monster first half to defeat Westminster 105-82 in the second-to-last game of the regular season.
Trevor Baskin continued to play out of his mind for the No. 7 Mavericks, finishing with 31 points on 12 of 15 shooting to go with five rebounds, six assists, three blocks and three steals in just 29 minutes played.
Michael McCurry went 4-for-7 from three-point range to finish with a career-high 16 points as all 13 Mavericks that entered the game scored at least once.
The win moves Colorado Mesa to 24-3 overall and 20-1 in the RMAC. The Mavericks are momentarily a half-game ahead of 19-1 Fort Lewis, who closes the season playing Friday and Saturday. The Mavs finished their road trip of three games in five days undefeated and have completed the regular season going 12-0 in true road games.
In the same gym that CMU suffered its only RMAC road loss in last season, the Mavericks were determined not to let the host Griffins stay in the game for any length of time. Colorado Mesa was relentless on defense and on the offensive glass while waiting for their perimeter shots to start falling, jumping out to leads of 7-0, 21-6 and 31-8 within the game's first 10 minutes.
Colorado Mesa scored over 50 points in both halves and led 52-28 at halftime. The Mavericks shot 56 percent from the field (39-70), 35 percent from three-point range (14-40) and 77 percent from the line (13-17). The Mavericks had just five turnovers, their lowest total this season, while racking up 26 assists, their fourth-highest total of the year.
Westminster struggled in the first half, shooting just 38 percent from the field and 25 percent from three, but had a hot-shooting second half in which they made 9 of 14 from deep and shot at a 54 percent clip from the field while outscoring CMU 54-53 in half number two. The damage was already done, however, as Westminster could only bridge the deficit to 17 points at its lowest in the second half.
Christopher Speller finished with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists as CMU's third scorer in double figures.

Christian Speller (three points),
Ethan Menzies (two points) and
Levi Dombro (two) all had one bucket apiece while
Elijah Knudsen got on the board by hitting a free throw with seven seconds remaining to become the 13
th scoring Maverick of the day. The Mavericks attempted 40 three-pointers, with 12 different Mavs attempting a three and nine different players making one.
Baskin wasted no time firing on all cylinders, hitting 8 of 10 shots in the first half to score 17 of his 31 points for the game before halftime. McCurry also was in double figures before the break, hitting 4 of 6 total attempts and 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. Kuhl and Jessup each scored all seven of their points in the second half.
Colorado Mesa outscored Westminster 50-34 in the paint, 20-3 on the fastbreak and 31-20 in points off the bench. The Mavericks outrebounded the Griffins 37-32, had nine steals to Westminster's one and blocked four shots while not having any of their shots blocked.
The Mavericks are set to end the RMAC regular season at home against Western Colorado on Saturday night. Be sure to get to Brownson Arena early, as it will be Senior Night for both the men's and women's Maverick programs.
