#12 Mavericks Comeback Effort Falls Just Short in Loss to #19 NNU

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 12 Colorado Mesa baseball team opened a weekend series that features another nationally ranked team in No. 19 Northwest Nazarene on Thursday (Feb. 22) afternoon at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex. The Mavericks surrendered 14 runs before roaring back and coming up short 14-12 in the opener.

Northwest Nazarene jumped out to a 14-0 lead after three and a half innings before the Mavericks answered beginning in the bottom of the fourth inning. Colorado Mesa answered with seven runs on the bottom of the fourth then kept chipping away with three in the bottom of the sixth inning. They got two more runs back in the bottom of the eighth inning but that was all the closer they would get on the scoreboard.

In the bottom of the ninth, Colorado Mesa would make things interesting as they were able to bring the go-ahead run to the plate but a fly out to left field ended the game.

Liam Hohenstein was saddled with his first loss of the season as he got the start in the series opener for the third straight week.

Caleb Ruter came into the game in the fifth inning and was the third pitcher used in the game. In his first appearance of the season, he gave his team a huge lift. Ruter pitched five shutout innings of relief and allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out six.

The Mavericks delivered a couple of big blows in their comeback attempt.

Christos Stefanos had a grand slam in the Mavericks seven run fourth inning. It was his first of the year and went directly down the left field line to make it 14-7. The junior finished the game 2-for-5 with a run scored and four runs driven in.

Max Berni delivered a pair of run scoring hits coming off the bench. In the sixth inning, he hit a two-run double to right field and followed that up with a two-run home run in the eighth inning which made it 14-12. The redshirt junior finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four runs driven in.

Joey Blank and Kennedy Hara each finished the game with three hits while Ethan Nunez added two hits and two runs driven in.

The two teams will continue the series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at Noon. The first game will be a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning game roughly 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
