#12 Mavericks Split Doubleheader with #19 NNU

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 12 Colorado Mesa baseball split a Friday (Feb. 23) matinee doubleheader with the No. 19 Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks at The Diamond at the Bus Bergman Sports Complex.

In the first game of the day, the Mavericks scored in the first two innings, but the Nighthawks scored four runs in the fourth and four runs in the sixth and were able to come away with a 10-8 win.

The Mavericks scored single runs in the first two innings off a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Christos Stefanos.

After going back-and-forth for the next four innings, the two teams were tied at 6-6 after five complete.

Northwest Nazarene plated four runs in the sixth inning to take the 10-6 advantage.

Ethan Nunez cut into the lead in the bottom half of the sixth inning with a solo blast to right center field on the first pitch he saw. It is his second home run of the season and made it 10-7 after six complete innings.

Rob Sharrar had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to make it 10-8 but that was all the closer the Mavericks would get in the game.

Sharrar finished the game with three hits while Joey Blank and Nunez each finished the game with two hits.

Kyle Miller started on the mound and didn't factor into the decision. He allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits walked three and struck out one in five innings of work.

Tyler Glowacki took the loss in relief of Miller.

In the night cap, the two teams locked horns in a pitcher's dual with Colorado Mesa coming away with a 2-1 win after a walk-off single by Ethan Ezor.

Nighthawk starter Kyle Etheridge retired 17 batters in a row from one out in the bottom of the second until two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, catcher Declan Wiesner laced a double to the left center field gap. Ethan Ezor followed and hit the first pitch he saw directly down the right field line for a single that scored pinch-runner Brady Webb from second base.

Colorado Mesa starter Cole Seward was equally impressive, and he is being credited with the rule book complete game shutout. Seward allowed one run (unearned) on five hits, walked one and struck out five in his seven innings of work.

Seward retired the final six batters of the game in a row.

The two teams will conclude the series with a single nine-inning game tomorrow beginning at Noon.
