COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Mesa men's basketball shot 61 percent from the field, its best single-game percentage this season, leading from wire to wire in a 92-72 road win over UCCS.
Trevor Baskin led the way with 17 points, shooting 7 of 10 from the field, while
Michael McCurry went 6-for-8 from the floor and set a new career high with 14 points.
Aidan Kuhl also scored 14, hitting three three-pointers, and corralled a career high six rebounds.
The win improves CMU to 19-3 overall and 15-1 in the RMAC, pulling the No. 10-ranked Mavericks into a tie for first place in the RMAC standings with No. 3 Fort Lewis, who was idle on Saturday. The Mavs and Skyhawks are one-and-a-half games up on third-place Colorado School of Mines at 14-3 and a whole six games ahead of MSU Denver and Black Hills State, who are tied for fourth at 9-7.
The Mavs' efficient shooting allowed them to still put up over 90 points for the eighth time this season on a night where CMU grabbed just five offensive rebounds and only had two second-chance points. The Mavs shot 60 percent or better from the field in both halves, shooting 61.8 percent (21-34) in half number one and 60 percent even (15-25) in half number two.
Colorado Mesa shot 48.9 percent from three-point range in the contest, CMU's third-best percentage of the season in that category. The Mavs hit nine threes while shooting 50 percent from behind the arc in the first half (9-18) and shot 5 of 11 from three in the second half.
The Mavs set the tone immediately on both ends of the floor, with
Owen Koonce blocking a shot on UCCS's first possession and Baskin answering with a three on the other end. Moments later,
Mac Riniker poked the ball loose for one of his three steals on the night and finished the fast-break layup to make it 5-0 CMU.
Although UCCS answered to tie the score at 5-all, Kuhl answered with the first two of his three triples sandwiched around a
Christopher Speller layup to make it 13-5 Mavs before UCCS called a timeout with 15:01 left in the first half. The Mountain Lions would not tie or take the lead again for the rest of the game.
Kuhl had 13 of his 14 points in the first half, shooting 5 of 7 from the field and 3 of 5 from deep in the opening 20 minutes and leading the team with four rebounds at the break.
Elijah Knudsen, nine days removed from hitting six triples against Westminster, also hit three three-pointers in the first-half but didn't score in the second half.
McCurry scored 10 of his career high 14 points in the second half, breaking his previous career high of 13 points with a fast break layup off a
Ty Allred steal with a minute remaining.
Trevor Baskin also scored 10 of his 17 points after halftime.
The Mavericks outscored UCCS 24-13 in fastbreak points, 42-38 in points in the paint and 39-35 in points off the bench. The Mavs committed 19 turnovers against 18 assists but forced UCCS into 16 turnovers while only allowing eight assists from the Mountain Lions.
The Mavs outrebounded UCCS 34-29 group-effort style, with Kuhl's six and
Reece Johnson's five leading the way while five players (Baskin, Koonce, Riniker,
Isaac Jessup and
Christopher Speller) all finished with three boards each.
Colorado Mesa returns home next weekend for what will likely be the most consequential regular season games remaining on the schedule. The No. 10 Mavericks are set to battle No. 17 Colorado School of Mines (20-5, 14-3 RMAC) next Friday, February 16 before facing fourth place MSU Denver (15-7, 9-7 RMAC) the following day. Tip-off for both is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., after the conclusion of the women's game.
